Log in console

Post by TsyMiroro »

Hello world ;-)

I use pfSense, a firewall derivated from FreeBSD.

pfSense has this console menu

Code: Select all

*** Welcome to pfSense 2.1-BETA0-pfSense (i386) on fw.domain.tld ***

 WAN (wan)       -> re0        -> v4/DHCP4: 192.168.1.194/24
 LAN (lan)       -> rl0        -> v4: 172.24.0.1/24
 OPT1 (opt1)     -> rl1        -> v4: 192.168.10.2/24

 0) Logout (SSH only) 8) Shell
 1) Assign Interfaces                  9) pfTop
 2) Set interface(s) IP address 10) Filter Logs
 3) Reset webConfigurator password 11) Restart webConfigurator
 4) Reset to factory defaults 12) pfSense Developer Shell
 5) Reboot system 13) Upgrade from console
 6) Halt system 14) Disable Secure Shell (sshd)
 7) Ping host 15) Restore recent configuration

Enter an option:
I think that it can be good if NAS4Free can give more options in the console, like
- view/show system logs (tail -f)
- view deamons logs
- view lan traffic
- ...

It can be needed for some people, not for all.

If it is possible, why not?

The idea is to have a conky-like infos.
A ncurses interface can be right. It can give
- lan traffics
- state of disks
- deamon status
- blink when problem detected

In my case, I have the firewall in a desk, near the modem/router, and show me pftop (a top for packet filter).
The NAS is in the same desk, but show only the console menu. For logs, I must get the shell, and put the command
top
to have permanently the states in the screen, but I have not the activities in the disks.

I have 3 screens in this desk (the 3rd is for debian server), that show logs for the running system/services.
It is not necessary, but, I like this. And when the boss come, it show that we work, not only get stuff in the net ;-)
If think that give this possibility can be fun, and not get out serious, fonctionnalities or features of NAS4Free.

If you want add this function, you must edit /etc/rc.initial. Create new lines, create new files, which will get system information on display, etc.
You can even add smiles, so they moved. :evil:
But I think, Information should be minimum, so I prefer carefully configure the server, and then take away his keyboard and display. Your boss can get a beautiful and readable pictures, when he use web. Example.
Also you can attach LCD display on NAS. Man
