Hello,

NTFS is a proprietary file system from Microsoft and used for Windows systems. All information which are available about it are found by "try and error" reverse engineering.

Windows NTFS and unix like file systems are not compatible, while Windows stores attributes like "backup", "hide" and "read-only" unix like systems use absolute different attributes like read, write and execute, for user, group members and all other. Furthermore things like sticky bits.

So in short words, you run in massive problems which are not necessary and can simply be avoided when you use the right tool for the job, NTFS for Windows machines, EXT for Linux machines and UFS2/ZFS for FreeBSD/NAS4Free.

Connect the disk to a Windows system, copy data to a separate place, format the disk in your FreeNAS machine to UFS2, copy data back und you have a reliable storage system for your reliable data.

Trust me, made such a lot of bad experience at friendship or work with connecting NTFS frives to unix like machines, do not do it...

Best regards
Shakky

Hi,
all my movies in this disk, and i don't have another 3tb drive
I would transfer this information into "I do not have a backup from 3TB of movies, when the drive fails all my movies are lost forever or I must spend many weeks to rip all movies again" :x

Ideal time to purchase a second 3TB drive for your NAS and keep the NTFS drive for usage with the Windows machine.
When I had to learn a hard lesson in my life, the question is not IF the harddisk will fail, the question is WHEN will it fail...

I do not real understand what you mean.

When you buy in future the new drive put it into your NAS 4Free machine, foramt as UFS2, setup a SAMBA share point to the new drive mount point.
Connect the NTFS drive to your Windows PC, mount the NAS4Free share. Then you can copy the data to your NAS.

My personal favourite Sync Tool for Windows is PATHSYNC, open-source, small, fast and reliable,I use it each day at work http://www.cockos.com/pathsync/
