Hi
How can I tell if a HDD has physical errors? A just noticed that a few files cannot be read. One file is estimated to take 30 minutes to copy. Is there a way to find out how bad it is and if all or parts of the data can be saved?

Re: Dying HDD?
Bummer. It's my USB flash drive (destination) and not the NAS4Free source drive that is acting up. Sorry.
But I'm still curious how and if I'm going to be notified if one of the HDD develops physical errors. I have Email reports enabled and I get SMART error email if a drive reaches 40 deg. Celsius. Will FreeBSD and NAS4Free know that a disk is about to fail and tell me?

You should set up scheduled SMART tests (both long and short) for your drives, and enable email reporting. If there are any problems with the self test, it will generate an email.
