Question about embedded install

Post by ChriZathens »

Hi to all!
I am in the process of buying an HP Microserver N40L which can host up to 4 HDDs (5 im you install a hacked BIOS..) and also has a usb port onboard.
I am thinking about using the embedded installation with it, but since I have no experience with embedded installs ( I have always used full installs an all my Freenas/Nas4Free setups over the years) I have a few questions:
  1. If I load the embedded install on a usb stick, and then make configuration changes, where is the config file stored? Will I need a second usb stick?
  2. If I install zfskerneltune and tune for 8GB Ram, the next time I reboot will this be overwritten due to embedded, or the setting is kept and I need to reinstall zfskerneltune only if I want to tune for more/less RAM?
Thanks in advance guys!

config changes that you do using webgui are saved on BootUSB and can be persistent betwen reboots ( Config changes that you do on files by hand are lost = like if you do changes in smb.conf or fpt.conf by hand).

Not totally sure, I think that changes are saved and persistent, and you only need to install zfskerntune if you want to change values for more/less RAM.
12.1.0.4 - Ingva (revision 7743) on SUPERMICRO X8SIL-F 8GB of ECC RAM, 11x3TB disk in 1 vdev = Vpool = 32TB Raw size , so 29TB usable size (I Have other NAS as Backup)

I have recently been using zfskerntune and learned it is persistent across boots. When you run it, the parameter changes are stored on the boot device. With NAS4Free running, check the following file: /cf/boot/loader.conf to see the saved parameter settings at the bottom of the file. If you do an upgrade or fresh install, you need to reinstall zfskerntune and run it to save your changes again. Make sure to read the release notice to see if you need a newer version of zfskerntune, like with the recent 531 release.
