Partition table compatible with both N4F and OI

Post by ku-gew »

Hello, I'm going to prepare soon a N4F system with one boot disk and two data disks ZFS RAID1.
I would like to format/partition/initialize them in a way to keep myself open to a switch to OpenIndiana, in case I may need it, without having to reformat/repartition.
Is this possible? How? I documented myself online and I read that FreeBSD uses GPT (just like Mac OS X), but OpenIndiana cannot read such partition table. Any other info?
I'm asking here in advance because I will set up everything during the holidays and I will have really little time, otherwise I would have played with the system myself before asking :)

Thank you very much.

your data disk ( ZFS RaidZ1 Raid1) is readable by any OS that use ZFS like Openindiana, so you only need to install Openindiana in a new (or same) boot disk and import / mount your ZFS storage pool.

I don't know how to prepare a multi O.S boot disk to select BSD(Nas4Free) and OpenIndiana at boot time.
12.1.0.4 - Ingva (revision 7743) on SUPERMICRO X8SIL-F 8GB of ECC RAM, 11x3TB disk in 1 vdev = Vpool = 32TB Raw size , so 29TB usable size (I Have other NAS as Backup)

Your terminology is a little misleading. When you say "two data disks ZFS RAID1," I take it to mean you are going to create a mirrored vdev? RAIDZ1 is like traditional RAID5, and thus requires a minimum of 3 disks.

Once the zfs pool has been created, it can be imported by any zfs capable OS. The only issue is the version of ZFS. Nas4Free uses v.28, so you need to make sure the OS you are contemplating has ZFS version equal to or greater than 28. Right now, it appears OpenIndiana also uses version 28, so you should be good. Before you switch either direction, you will want to export the pool (zpool export poolie), if poolie is the name of the pool. Then on the new OS, you import it with zpool import poolie.

I never mentioned RAIDZ1, it was a typo from raulfg3. I could have used "mirror" to avoid confusion, you are right.

Thank you both for the clear answers, they clarify all what I wanted to know. I don't want a multiboot, I was only worried that a switch (complete) to another OS that uses a different "partition scheme" would require me to start over with the data disks. Good, that I was wrong.
I will ask in the ZEVO forum about using in N4F or OI ZFS disks formatted using ZFS for mac (ZEVO): they use GPT and only the second partition is given to ZFS, the first one is for EFI.

I also wanted to ask if it is possible to format a pool for an older ZFS implementation (prepare with Solaris 11 a disk to be used in OI, or with N4F a disk to be used in previous FreeBSD versions), but I found it by myself:
"zpool create -o version=XX"

I think I know all I need to build the N4F NAS for my family. I haven't decided yet about the OS for my personal NAS (SXCE 11.1, OI or N4F), but that's another discussion :)
