Bizarre network port behaviour

Post by kernow »

Now, you may look at this and go 'this isn't a NAS4Free problem because it's just the cable being pulled or whatever'

Code: Select all

Jun 27 09:39:06 zeus kernel: bge0: link state changed to UP
Jun 27 09:38:57 zeus kernel: bge0: link state changed to DOWN
Jun 27 07:30:46 zeus kernel: bge0: link state changed to UP
Jun 27 07:30:37 zeus kernel: bge0: link state changed to DOWN
I was in bed during this time, I have the NAS (hp microserver), plugged into an SMC wireless-N access point / switch and this thing has been solid as a rock for the past few years I've owned it. The only time I've had this error before is if I've actually power cycled the switch, or disconnected the cable from either end between NAS and switch.

I wonder what's going on? I am using the same cable I have for years, and the same equipment - I never got this on FreeNAS, I can only think it is a new network driver for my hardware? But I fail to see how that is doing it because this happens so rarely. It's happened maybe 3 times in blocks like this since going to NAS4Free, so it's not enough to bother me but I find it highly odd. :?:

Both times it was 'down' for 9 seconds exactly too. How strange. Maybe it's due to power fluctuations in the house, or .. I have no idea because as I said everything has been fine for years.

I've even just checked all the connections, wiggled them about on NAS and switch side, all firmly connected - recheck the logs - no extra errors.

No idea what could be causing this. If the power was being cut to the switch it'd be down for a lot longer than exactly 9 seconds each time because it takes a fair time to initalize, but I guess it could be doing ethernet traffic before the web frontend is accessible.

You are not alone, use Google to find " bge0 up down" there are other people whit the same problem in Solarix, Linux, etc..

see this old FreeNAs Forum: https://sourceforge.net/apps/phpbb/free ... ge0#p54081

If you think to buy a new NIC I recomen Intel NICs like: http://www.alternate.es/html/product/In ... ed/49027/? because have the most well drivers for BSD.

PD: what NIC really do you use?
12.1.0.4 - Ingva (revision 7743) on SUPERMICRO X8SIL-F 8GB of ECC RAM, 11x3TB disk in 1 vdev = Vpool = 32TB Raw size , so 29TB usable size (I Have other NAS as Backup)

I don't know what NIC it is, it's built into the microserver onboard. - ah, broadcom TG3.

https://sourceforge.net/apps/phpbb/free ... ge0#p54081 aha! typical. I wonder if this will ever be fixed. It happens *very* rarely, maybe once a month at the absolute most, I wonder what causes it at all.

I thought this had gone what with using FBSD 9 or whatever, but that last N4F update (306) has made it worse than ever :(

Hi,

Just a few more ideas, I am sure you have already checked...

Power saving settings at computer BIOS which
Special settings for the nic at BIOS related to the NIC

Yeah man, checked both of those, it was fine on FN7 based on an older BSD, but now.
