Newby with the same old questions.

Post by fizzgig656 »

Hi all, again sorry for posting what is probably an old question asked by yet another newbie. Im up and running i am looking at setting up access via the WAN. simply, i would like to access my nas from everywhere, LIGHT use only noting to special! Ive has the webserver and FTP running for a few minute and used them but i have some questions.
QUESTIONS
do i use FTP or webserver?
is owncloud overkill? does it just run from my NAS?
permissions, as its only me and possible my wife do i need to much changes with permissions and security? for Example one user "main" has full control over files/folders, one user "view" has read and write but not delete or modify? this over all folders/files. so simple 2 setups.

I am new to nas4free from XP background, but am ok following scripts, using putty etc.

thanks all.

so your saying just use the FTP service on nas4free with winscp? is it simpler? do i still need to go through the process of making ftp securer ie sftp tweaking ive read?

ok, so im trying to set this up. gone through this http://wiki.nas4free.org/doku.php?id=do ... figuration

so ive created a self-signed cert and key, pasted both in the system/general/webgui and changed HTTP to HTTPS. now access the webgui is only by https and i accept the certicate error "This Connection is Untrusted",
but I asume (obviously i guess) i need to enable SSH to get file transfer working, but i can only get it working if i tick "permit root logon" and "password authentication", i read somewhere else to not tick these as its not secure! but haven't i made it secure by adding the self-signed cert and key?
Ive not nothing else in the SSH service except the port "22" the rest was empty/blank.

also do i need to use winSCP with a private key file?

also is there a way round it where i dont need client software ie the winSCP? or is that looking at webserver's?

I have "password authentication" checked and no certificates, only password.. So try to get that working first - then mess with private/public keys.

how i cant get this working...http://wiki.nas4free.org/doku.php?id=faq:0096
i can open the putty terminal to my nas via the DNS name. i can put in the following

$ ssh -v -p 445 -L 8888:localhost:444 LOCALID@MYNASNAME.dyndns.org

port 445 is port forwarded to port 22 for SSH.- i changed form port 22 as it wasnt working.

ive tried port 8888:localhost:22/443/444/445 in the string above to see if thats the problems, but it doesnt make any difference.

i can run the above and get the confirmation yes/no to accept the certificate, then the request for my password, then returns be back to the welcome banner/logon.

but i still cant run the last bit of the wiki quide, https://localhost:8888/

any one got any idea's???

Hi, does anyone else use SSH like this to get to the main nas4free webgui? or is accessing it via port forwarding using https as secure as using SSH?
