[Solved] Extremely Slow Write Read Fine

Post by ctrlhomer »

Sorry if this has been posted else where I could not find it.

For almost 2 years I was using FreeNas 8. It was working fine. But for the past month or so I started experiencing extremely slow write transfers. The transfer speed ranged from 500kb/s to 1.25mb/s. Takes over 20 minutes to send a 1GB file. So I decided to change over to NAS4Free to see if it would clear up. Same issues. I am able to transfer the files from windows to windows just fine. Read transfers are fine.

I ran a iperf test results where 485/856 which is fine for me. So I know my network setup is fine.
I have checked for errors on my drives no issues that are being reported.

My zfs v28 pool is 8tb with ~2tb used (was still having the same issues before upgrading to v28)

I am completely lost for this one. To make matters worse I have had this issue completely go away for a few hours then start right back up.

Copying the file to another directory in my pool does the same thing. Same write transfers for both SMB/NFS shares.

I am running NAS4Free off a USB thumb drive, on a atom E-350 with 8gbs or ram.

Could the "disk power-on lifetime" errors be causing this issue?

My guess a drive is failing but is not reporting it. But I really dont have a clue where to look next. All computers on the network are affected the same way

check for the disk that have this line:

Code: Select all

5 Reallocated_Sector_Ct 0x0033 041 041 140 Pre-fail Always FAILING_NOW 1265
this indicate a fail disk, you need to replace to restore your old speed.

and read about WD green drives in NAS to correct parking head times to a better number for a NAS.
12.1.0.4 - Ingva (revision 7743) on SUPERMICRO X8SIL-F 8GB of ECC RAM, 11x3TB disk in 1 vdev = Vpool = 32TB Raw size , so 29TB usable size (I Have other NAS as Backup)

Thanks, exactly what it was. Never wanted to use the WD green drive in the first place but I had a spare laying around.

wait 2 years to correct head parking values of WD green drives is toooooo long, your other HD are in risk ( not necesary to change it, but you need to monitorize or see each month to be sure that still are in good conditions), use SMART to monitorize.
12.1.0.4 - Ingva (revision 7743) on SUPERMICRO X8SIL-F 8GB of ECC RAM, 11x3TB disk in 1 vdev = Vpool = 32TB Raw size , so 29TB usable size (I Have other NAS as Backup)

Hi,

Next hint, check the airflow in your system, 50 degrees centigrade are too much :o
Clean filters, check location from your NAS and put it to a cooler location, check blowers for function and dust, when you have had reduced the speed from the blowers increase it...
