Setting up my NAS / Windows Mac OSX Share / CIFS / SAMBA
Hi guys,
I have just purchased a HP microserver and am having trouble setting up the hard drives and sharing files.
I have followed every tutorial I can find and can get the hard drive added, mounted and create a share but when I got to my Mac or PC it won't let me map the drive it doesn't let me log in as a guest? I didn't set any parameters so I should be able to log in?
Can anyone point me to an easy set up guide? Or give me help?
Regards

which really means not have to login at all; the only thing you need to check is the CIFS/SMB Authentication setting. Make sure it is set to "Anonymous" and you will be OK. This is explained in the latest SUG, Section 6.1.DanAddz wrote:log in as a guest

Re: Setting up my NAS
Hay Guys,
Thanks for the help, i have managed to sort the problem out, i guess it was me just being a noobie.
I found that i was creating a share called "photos" and when it asked for the path i was trying to put the file name as well, this made the file error i was getting.
E.G. i was putting the share name "Photos" and the path as "/mnt/BigDisk/Photos." this should have been obviously just "/mnt/BigDisk/
Sorry about that guys,
thanks again for the help.

Setting up folders within shares
Hay guys,
I have been creating shares for my nas and when I try to create a folder on my pc or mac in that share, e.g. A folder called photos in the share called Data, and when I place things into the folder it comes up wi an error that I don't have permission to access this file, this file also is greyed out so I can't access it?
Any ideas as to what I am doing wrong?
Cheers,
DanAddz

Re: Setting up my NAS / Map Windows Share / CISF / SAMBA
Hi DanAddz,
This is still the same issue. I have unlocked your original topic and merged the new one you created. The links I gave you above are comprehensive and should have given you all the knowledge necessary to achieve your goal. You will need some of that knowledge to answer some of the questions I will have to ask in order to help you.
Replace "index" with "status" in your address bar:
then press enter.
You will get a complete report on the system. Save is as "html complete, or html single page" then Zip it and attach to your next post here please. I will review your configuration and once I see what you have accomplished will be try to give you specific instructions for reaching your goal.
Thanks,
Al

Not without lots more information about your set-up. Please go to the WebGUI and get a status.php. Like this:DanAddz wrote:Any ideas as to what I am doing wrong?

Hi DanAddz,
OK, I have reviewed your status.php, as of right now, make absolutely no changes to any settings until we are done getting things to work as you desire.
The good news is you are most of the way and it may be a simple thing to adjust your permissions so everything works.
I have a few questions:

I have a few questions:
- The client machine you are using is a MacBook Pro running OSX Lion. Is this correct?
- You have created a mount point for your 2Tb drive called "data" at /mnt/data and you created a CIFS/SMB share called "Videos" for /mnt/data. Is this correct?
- All computers on your network are part of a Windows Workgroup called "WORKGROUP" and if your MacBook Pro asks about a "Workgroup" or "Domain" you tell it to use "WORKGROUP". Is this correct?
- You want to share data between your computers using CIFS/SMB without using/requiring authentication of any type. Is this correct?
- You successfully created a folder called "videos" on the server from your MAcBook Pro client but were unable to copy files into it. Is this correct?
- When you try to copy a file into the video folder on the Videos share you receive an error. If this is correct please include the exact text of the error in your next post.
You do not have a share named data, you have shared /mnt/data and called it "Videos".DanAddz wrote:i have tried to create files within a share folder named data

Re: Setting up my NAS / Map Windows Share / CISF / SAMBA
Hi Al,
Sorry but i had to reset my nas and have now attached another Status file for you to review, just incase somethings have changed.
i have answered the following questions on the new Status file.
1.The client machine you are using is a MacBook Pro running OSX Lion. Is this correct? Yes this is correct.
2.You have created a mount point for your 2Tb drive called "data" at /mnt/data and you created a CIFS/SMB share called "Videos" for /mnt/data. Is this correct?I have created a mount point for my 250GB drive called "data" at /mnt/data and have created a CIFS/SMB share called "Videos" for /mnt/data. note: i do have a 2TB drive in the nas box but am not using it yet as i am only testing this nas4free, hoping to use it soon.
3.All computers on your network are part of a Windows Workgroup called "WORKGROUP" and if your MacBook Pro asks about a "Workgroup" or "Domain" you tell it to use "WORKGROUP". Is this correct? Yes all of the computers are on the "WORKGROUP" and im not sure how to make the MacBook Pro use the Workgroup "WORKGROUP."
4.You want to share data between your computers using CIFS/SMB without using/requiring authentication of any type. Is this correct? I want to be able to let people connected to the nas see shared folders like Videos,Photos,Music etc and then later give them personal folders just for them etc.
5.You successfully created a folder called "videos" on the server from your MAcBook Pro client but were unable to copy files into it. Is this correct? I am successfully able to create a folder called Videos within the share called Videos, i no confusing but im just testing, but am unable to copy files into this new folder without the mac giving me a error message saying that i dont have permission.
6.When you try to copy a file into the video folder on the Videos share you receive an error. If this is correct please include the exact text of the error in your next post. The Message is "The operation can’t be completed because you don’t have permission to access some of the items."
Hope you can help,

Hi DanAddz,
OK, I have reviewed your new status.php, as of right now, make absolutely no changes to any settings until we are done getting things to work as you desire. I don't like repeating myself and I don't like doing the same work twice without good reason. If you made changes before you read my previous post you should have backed them out so I would not have to review your entire config from scratch. I will not do it a thrid time for this issue.
Alright, you removed the 2Tb drive from the config and you changed the share name to "Video". We have established the proper locations/names for mount points and shares.
OK, we need to find out what the ownership and permissions are. Please post the results of:

You don't have to, it means little to the Mac. You yourself have to know what it is and understand why it is there to avoid confusion when you see it on the network from your Mac.DanAddz wrote:im not sure how to make the MacBook Pro use the Workgroup "WORKGROUP."

Re: Setting up my NAS / Map Windows Share / CISF / SAMBA
Hi DanAddz,
The permissions of your share
They should look like this:
You can fix it by doing this:
Please verify that you are now able to do anything you want in the share.
Once you do we can continue on to configure authentication. Since you should now have a working shared folder you will need to decide what you want for the other clients. A private home directory for each??
Let me know,
Al
The permissions of your share
are incorrect. I do not know why since a default configuration ensures they are right from the start. I also see there appear to be some Apple related files. I do not regularly use Macs on my CIFS/SMB network, but when I have I don't remember them leaving files around like that. I do not use AFP regularly, but those look like AFP realted files. I do not know if your MacBook Pro created them for it's own needs. It is possible, (since Lion is merely a highly customized version of FreeBSD) but unlikely, that your problems have been caused by Lion trying to impose it's own authentication structure on the share. This may or may not continue to give you fits.DanAddz wrote:drwxr-xr-x 2 ftp wheel 512 Dec 29 11:01 Videos

Re: Setting up my NAS / Map Windows Share / CISF / SAMBA
Hay Al,
Thanks again,
I have done this and am now able to copy files into the Videos folder. I have tested the share and created another folder called "Photos" and tried to copy the same file to it and was given the same error.
So i am able to copy a file into the "Videos" folder in the "Video" Share, but am not able to create a folder in the "Videos" folder and copy files into that. I cant create anymore Folders in the "Video" Share without getting the same error.
I know you didnt ask me to do that but i thought i would test it for you.
Thanks,

Re: Setting up my NAS / Map Windows Share / CISF / SAMBA
Hi DanAddz,
Shall we proceed with configuring authentication and creating home directories?
If so I will need all the user names you've already set up on the computers that will be accessing the server. I will also need to know the OS of each PC.

Al
As I mentioned before:DanAddz wrote:So this must mean that there is obviosly something stoping me viewing/editing the share on my MAC.....
I thought you'd find it works properly from a Windows PC. This makes sense since CIFS/SMB is a creature of Microsoft. Your OSX Lion, being based on FreeBSD, is trying to impose Unix like rules for ownership and permissions. I don't know of an easy way around this, the simplest thing I can think of is for you to adjust things yourself when necessary with chmod and chown. Having said that, the behavior may change once we turn on authentication and all the machines have to logon in order to do anything at all.Al562 wrote: It is possible, (since Lion is merely a highly customized version of FreeBSD) but unlikely, that your problems have been caused by Lion trying to impose it's own authentication structure on the share. Hi al
Thanks a lot for your help.
I want to set this up however I am probably gonna be moving out soon and will have to make new permissions then. However at the moment I have two windows and one pc running at the moment. I also want to be able to stream music/videos/photos to my Xbox,PS3 and Sharp bluray player but am finding the streaming part difficult.
What information do you need other then the types of OS?
Cheers

The usernames that are set up on each computer you want to have access to the server. We will need to create a user on your NAS4Free server that identically matches each user on the client computers. It will be easier and you will learn more by doing them all at once.DanAddz wrote: What information do you need other then the types of OS?

Re: Setting up my NAS / Map Windows Share / CISF / SAMBA
Hi DanAddz,
We'll do the Macbook first since it's yours, you are the System Administrator, it already has all the *nix type tools you might want that the Windows PC's don't, so it will get a slightly different setup from the Windows users.
So at this point we have a shared folder called Videos that everyone can access and we are using no authentication. We are going to create some new users and turn authentication on.
Starting right now, remember that everything you read and type is capitalization dependent. Daniel is not the same as daniel so type things in exactly as shown. There can be no extra spaces or anything else, if you are unsure, ask.
Let's start with Daniel:
You should now have 3 users and 3 home directories.
Please post the results of so I can verify everything is OK.
By default the system creates home directories that only the user has full access to. This is the normal way. If you want to have access as admin to all home directories but keep users out of each others then change the group to admin and give the group rwx permissions. This works because you are a member of the admin group and no one else is. Each user still has complete access to their own directory because they own it. Here is how you would do it:
This is a basic CIFS/SMB multi-user configuration that is easy to setup and uses many default system settings while allowing the administrator great flexibility in managing the users, ownership, groups, permissions and priviledges. This is one way to do it, there are others and some people may claim it is easier or harder. Ultimately it depends on your level of knowledge and investment in time. Remember that NAS4Free is primarily a *nix type server so administration and management are usually best done via *nix tools and commands or the WebGUI. These tools should all exist already on your Macbook Pro, all you need to do is learn how to use them. This is beyond the scope of the forum, but we help if we can.
In theory if you did everything right, your network is a standard configuration and your clients use common usernames and passwords, then you should now have access to everything. Your users should have access to the Videos folder and their home folders, nothing else. This should work seamlessly for Windows PC's with Windows Explorer and Macs with Finder since the OS's, by default, should be sending to the server the credentials of the locally logged on user. Since the credentials of the local user are exactly the same as the credentials of a user on the server, authentication is seamless.
Once you set up SSH you should be able to log in from your Mac as root (if desired) and do anything you want in any filesystem or login as Daniel and be able to do anything you want only in /mnt. This way you can manage everything without using Finder or WebGUI, the options are endless.
Well, I don't think I forgot anything.
Please let me know if everything is OK or if you have any questions.
Regards,

So at this point we have a shared folder called Videos that everyone can access and we are using no authentication. We are going to create some new users and turn authentication on.
Starting right now, remember that everything you read and type is capitalization dependent. Daniel is not the same as daniel so type things in exactly as shown. There can be no extra spaces or anything else, if you are unsure, ask.
Let's start with Daniel:
- Go to WebGUI tab> Access|Users. Right now the list should be empty.
- Click the + sign on the right side.
- Do not change any of the information that is already filled in unless I tell you to or you really know what you are doing.
- Fill in the fields as follows:
- When you have it properly filled out click the "Add" Button at the bottom left.
- You will be back at WebGUI tab> Access|Users and you should now see 1 user. Click the "Apply Changes" Button at the upper left.
- You should see that "the changes have now been applied successfully".
- A home directory should have been created by the system for you with the correct permissions. Check that it is there by issuing:
If it is not, stop right here and let me know so we can figure out what went wrong.
Code: Select all
ls -lR /mnt
- Go to WebGUI tab> Access|Users.
- Click the + sign on the right side.
- Do not change any of the information that is already filled in unless I tell you to or you really know what you are doing.
- Fill in the username and password same as you did for Daniel. Be careful with capitalization, etc. Remember it has to be exactly the same as on the client computer.
- The following you will fill in differently from Daniel since Bryan is not a system administrator. He gets nologin shell, is only a member of ftp (the designated CIFS/SMB guest account), no other group and he gets his own home directory:
- When you have it properly filled out click the "Add" Button at the bottom left.
- You will be back at WebGUI tab> Access|Users and you should now see 2 users. Click the "Apply Changes" Button at the upper left.
- You should see that "the changes have now been applied successfully".
- A home directory should have been created by the system for you with the correct permissions. Check that it is there by issuing:
If it is not, stop right here and let me know so we can figure out what went wrong.
Code: Select all
ls -lR /mnt
Code: Select all
/mnt/data/georgePlease post the results of
Code: Select all
ls -lR /mntBy default the system creates home directories that only the user has full access to. This is the normal way. If you want to have access as admin to all home directories but keep users out of each others then change the group to admin and give the group rwx permissions. This works because you are a member of the admin group and no one else is. Each user still has complete access to their own directory because they own it. Here is how you would do it:
Code: Select all
chown :admin /mnt/data/bryan
chmod g=rwx /mnt/data/bryanIn theory if you did everything right, your network is a standard configuration and your clients use common usernames and passwords, then you should now have access to everything.
Regards,
Al

Re: Setting up my NAS / Map Windows Share / CISF / SAMBA
Hi DanAddz,
Just what I was expecting and the reason why I did not have you turn authentication on yet
.
I previously wrote:
Daniel Adshead != Daniel_Adshead
Arthur Adshead != Arthur_Adshead
An underscore "_" is not the same thing as a space " ". These accounts will not work as desired, authentication will not be seamless. Your "admin" account Daniel_Adshead will not automatically authenticate.
At least since authentication is still set to Anonymous we don't any mysterious "failure to login" errors
.
The only other thing I see is incorrect is that you did not adjust Groups and permissions as I wrote previously:
On the bright side, user Daniel appears to be OK, but you can do better than 1 out of 3.
So, what to do now that you understand spaces are not valid characters in usernames:

This means most of what I wrote in my last post is worthless. If you had told me the correct usernames I would have given you different instructions.DanAddz wrote:i have had to change the names of the users

So, what to do now that you understand spaces are not valid characters in usernames:
- Decide which you prefer, changing the client logins so that authentication will be seamless or using the accounts as is and having to login with different credentials when you want to access the server. Remember, if you choose to login with different credentials the server will require them everytime you connect to it. Depending on how you use your server/client this couls happen several times a day. Frankly, I always make sure all logins are identical, it saves a lot of trouble.
- Adjust groups and permissions as previously noted.

Re: Setting up my NAS / Map Windows Share / CISF / SAMBA
Hi DanAddz,
OK, that looks better and the accounts should now authenticate automagically. You still have some files in the shared folders that are not rwxrwxrwx so you should fix that when you get a minute. First thing you should do is go back to WebGUI tab> Services|CIFS/SMB|Settings and set authentication to "Local User". This will cause the server to authenticate anyone who tries to connect, your users should all authenticate automagically if everything is setup right and they should have the appropriate permissions for shared and private folders while anyone in the admin group will have access to all folders. Restart your PC's after you change the authentication setting and try everything.
Let us know how it goes.

Re: Setting up my NAS / Map Windows Share / CISF / SAMBA
Ok
I have done what you said and have tested this on my PC and on my Mac, and it works perfectly.
I tested this on my Dads PC (Arthur) and he is unable to see the NAS at all? He is running Windows 8 as it is a new PC, maybe this is stopping it from working?
Also I wanted to ask should i be using SMB2 for "Max protocol" in the CIFS/SMB settings or NT1?
Cheers

Re: Setting up my NAS / Map Windows Share / CISF / SAMBA
Good job, glad you've got it workingDanAddz wrote:I have done what you said and have tested this on my PC and on my Mac, and it works perfectly.
Should not stop it, I have Win8 PC's and they work just fine. The difference is my network/servers pre-exist Win8 and when I set-up the PC's I automatically know how to do it so they will properly connect automagically. This is not the same in your case.DanAddz wrote:He is running Windows 8 as it is a new PC, maybe this is stopping it from working?
Try going to the desktop, open Windows Explorer and look at the "Network" icon in the left pane. See if your server shows up there with the other computers. If it does great, if not, type the following into the address bar at the top of the window:
If your network/server/PC are properly set-up your Dad should see shared files, or at least be prompted for a password. If it does not work try:\\YourServerName\YourShareName
Code: Select all
\\YourServer_IP_Address\YourShareNameOnce you can see the share on PC, map a drive to it if you'd like.
Since you have a mixed environment, stick with NT1 and AIO.DanAddz wrote:should i be using SMB2 for "Max protocol" in the CIFS/SMB settings or NT1?
All the best,
Al
