I have a NAS4Free with a ZFS pool with two 2TB hard drives in it. I would like to remove one of those HDs and use it for another purpose. Some time in the future I will buy another HD and either put the original 2TB drive back in or put the newly purchased HD in. But that might not be for several weeks.
So my questions are:
1) Is there a preferred "safe" way of doing this? Or do I just shut down N4F, pull one of the HDs, and then turn it back on?
2) Is there anything inherently bad in letting the ZFS pool operate in a degraded state for an extended period other than not having the safety of a mirror?
BTW, I have a second NAS which acts as mirror to this N4F NAS, so I do have a backup of my data.
This is the old XigmaNAS forum in read only mode,
it will taken offline by the end of march 2021!

actually , there are no ZFS on wiki to describe that, but there are a lot of Oracle & ZFS that is valid, you can see:

Re: Removing 1 HD from a 2 HD zfs pool
Thanks for the link. I read up on the various commands. "Detach" was the command I used to drop the HD out of the mirrored pool. It was a pretty straightforward process.
