Restoring data from one JBOD to another

Post by yds »

I recently had to replace one of the drives in my JBOD array. Once I set up the new JBOD array, I need to copy all of my files from my second JBOD array on the same machine (I had rsync do a nightly local sync of my main JBOD to this second one before the disk failure, so I have my files still). What is the fasted way to get all my files back to the main JBOD array? I tried doing a copy of all directories using the file manager, but this is taking a long time, and seems to hang.

System details. Freenas 0.7, two JBOD arrays of 6TB each. Total files of about 3.3TB.

Hi Yds,

Welcome to the NAS4Free forum. Below is information you may find helpful.

Please read and follow the Forum Rules & Guidelines and the FAQs.
By doing so you will:
  • Understand what information you should provide when you ask a question or report a problem/bug. By providing all information upfront you will get faster and better answers; that's what you want right?
  • Find the answer to your problem in the FAQs or use the Advanced search to search the forum.
  • Help us understand your problem and allow us to provide an accurate answer/solution without asking additional questions.
  • Help the community by keeping the forum clean, focused and professional.
  • Remember to use WebGUI Tab> Help|Report Generator when creating new topics/threads.
  • If you have not, then please read the latest Setup & User Guide.
Quixplorer (File Manager) is not meant to be used for bulk data transfer, only for minor everyday file management tasks. The best way to achieve your goal is to reverse the process that backed up your data in the first place. Just set up a local rsync from your backup to the new JBOD. Make sure you do not confuse the destination and source drives or tell it not to delete, since rsync will be happy to copy a blank drive (essentially erasing your backup if you are not careful).

All the best,
Al

Thanks for the advice Al. That did the trick and seemed to be running a lot faster than using the cp command also (which I also tried, but had the machine reboot on me). All is well again!
