nas4free on ssd

Post by dolphs »

hi - I am planning to migrate my current debian storage server to NAS4FREE-9.1.x
As I can equip 2x SATA-600 and 4x SATA-300 ports on my 16Gb-"Asus P8H77-I mainboard" I am plannign to reuse my "old" 32Gb OCZ Vertex SSD on a sata-300 port and configure a main partition for NAS4FREE, on this ssd I require another 15Gb to run Win7 in Oracle Virtual box (2Gb ram) which can be considered as " vmdata". Further it is required to run vlc as a server, sabnzbd+ and possibly spotweb.
2x 2Tb storage drives (sata-600) will be in use ( ZFS ) for data storage and streaming data - Having all this in mind I tend to go for the Full platform installation as it should provide flexibility and ease for OS customisation. I believe a tool as gparted would be most welcome to reorganise the ssd card as SWAP should not be on it, possibly the SWAP-partition can be entirely eliminated considering the amount of RAM that can be utilised (16Gb). Last but not least I am convinced some tuning would be required to eleminate unnecessary disk writes to the sdd.

Things I am seeking answers for in particular are:
1/ embedded install or full in this scenario - I would say the last one ( full )
2/ lay out ssd card, as I am considering a 15Gb separate data partition for vbox, also additional nas4free packages are needed to be installed - is that a correct approach?
3/ tuning parameters for the ssd card known that can be safely used to minmise disk writes?
4/ swap file needed on hard disk, if so what size?

Looking forward to your posts, TiA!

while the 32 Gb SSD would hold the N4F and a lot more
N4F embedded is likely less than 1Gb
"a lot more" is not the sort of thing I would consider.

I am a proponent of "stand alone NAS"
doing the NAS job with out the potential of adverse interaction.
keeping the data safe is paramount to me.

doing lots of stuff is [IMHO] a threat to that safety
that it was designed as a stand alone box I consider an advantage.
If I wanted risk I could have hung a shared drive on a copy of XP.

Hi Dolphs,

Answering your questions:
1 - Use Full Install.
2 - SSD offers no advantage I can see, use it for something else. Use 40GB SATA (or some other size) for OS drive instead.
3 - Don't even worry about this, use standard drive.
4 - Swap = to amount of RAM on MB, up to double amount of RAM, but no more.

I'm with Armandh on this one, the less complicated the better.

Regards,
Al
