NAS4FREE UI and roadmap

Post by sandule »

Any chance of NAS4Free moving to a simple user interface like Synology's DSM?

For us newbie's it would be great to have a simple interface that lets you install 3rd party apps without having to do so much command line.

I think the combination of a UI like the Synology DSM combined with ZFS would make for a killer server.

Also, where can I find the NAS4Free roadmap?

Hello,

be aware Nas4Free is a project of volunteer, so be patient.
According to my current understanding the software Design doesn't support Plug-ins/third party apps.
Perhaps u must try Freenas Version 8 or compile a Nas4Free version yourself, which contains then the needed additional apps.
Or U must ask Zoon if he wants to design an additional simple user interface but I think he is currently busy with reviewing the existing codebase for bug fixing...

Thanks for the reply. I was just curious. I have yet to find something as powerful as NAS4Free yet with the simplicity as the Synology DSM. I just don't want to lose the benefits of ZFS.

12.1.0.4 - Ingva (revision 7743) on SUPERMICRO X8SIL-F 8GB of ECC RAM, 11x3TB disk in 1 vdev = Vpool = 32TB Raw size , so 29TB usable size (I Have other NAS as Backup)

If you want to test, please try OMV http://www.openmediavault.org/ is based on Debian, and can surprise you, but because is Debian=Linux, you need to use ext4, XFs, or simmilar ( there are some post about how to install ZFS or import a pool, but is not supported by developer:

Thank you Raul. I really like NAS4Free but I keep screwing things up when I try to install software. That is why I asked about a Synology like UI coming to NAS4Free so that it would simplify the installation of additional packages.

Not sure if that is in the roadmap though.
