Which formats can it stream?

Post by Newtsy »

Hi all,

Installed NAS4Free (latest stable version) this past weekend and was thinking of purchasing an Apple TV to go along with the new setup. However, before I plunk down that money I wanted to know if the iTunes/DAAP service that comes with NAS4Free allows for the streaming of video and pictures as well to Apple TV?

Thanks for any guidance!

Someone correct me if I am wrong about this, but the DAAP server that comes with NAS4Free only streams music. The only formats it supports:
  • .mp3
  • .m4a
  • .m4p
  • .ogg
  • .flac
  • .wma
There are other facilities in NAS4Free that will stream movies and pictures (like Fuppies, the UPnP media streamer). And there has been talk about installing MiniDLNA. You could check those forums as far as video/picture streaming.

From my understanding, Plex is the way to go for AppleTV. Unfortunately, there is no BSD version of Plex (OSX, Windows, and Linux only).

Thanks for the clarification, Captain!

I can deal with that. However, I'm curious to know if anyone has successfully enabled the iTunes/DAAP service so that music will stream to an iPad2. I don't see the server name I used in my particular setup on my iPad2, but do see it on my MacBook Pro. However, when I click on the "SHARED" item in iTunes on the laptop a window flashes up then immediately disappears, so I can't access the service despite seeing it listed (yes, Zeroconf/Bonjour is enabled).

Any other thoughts?

Hey gang!

Anyone have any luck using "9.0.0.1 - Sandstorm (revision 141)" to serve music files via the iTunes/DAAP service?

When I fire up iTunes I see my named service in the "SHARED" library section of iTunes, but when I click on it I get no listing of the music files. At this point since I'm pretty much a newb with the NAS4Free stuff I'm attributing my problem to a lack of knowledge on my part (doesn't help that I'm not much of a network techie).

So, any suggestions would be appreciated?!

I use I Tunes 9.0.3.15 and I have not had any issues with my "Shared Tunes" I did upgrade once a long time ago to 10 and noticed that It stopped working. Not really a big deal to me so I just stayed with 9. I was hoping that eventually someone could fix that, just wish I knew a lot more about code to help. Though I havent a clue!
