N40L & WOL

Post by ChriZathens »

Hi all!
I have - as my signature describes - an HP Proliant Micro Server N40L as a backup NAS.
I've seen here post regarding N40L and WOL. I personally don't need it so never bothered to check.
Looking in Network|LAN Managment I could see no WOL option, though. I thought that it may be happening because I had never enabled WOL from Bios. But I finally checked yesterday, pluging a monitor, and realized that from Bios, WOL is enabled.. :?
I understand that this specific machine is reported in many posts as problematic with WOL, but I would think that the menu option would at least be there..
So what's the deal and I don't see any WOL options in Network|LAN Managment ???

This is confusing, but the HP Microserver N40L (and the N36L before it, I have one of each) supports WOL in the bios, but unfortunately the onboard ethernet card (seen as bge0 from within nas4free) does NOT support wol ! If you want to use wake on lan with this server you need to add a PCIe network card which does support wol. I have added an Intel 1000CT network card to my N40L and have tested WOL with Freenas 9.1.0.1 in the last few days.

By the way, anyone in the UK ... the HP N40L makes a great little nas4free server ... currently you can get it for just over £200 online and you get £100 cashback from HP. Not sure what prices are like in other countries. Comes with 2Gb memory (more than enough for nas4free), and a 250GB disk, that I removed leaving sapce for four SATA disks. Also has an internal USB socket that I have a 4GB USB stick in to boot off. You can boot off a liveUSB nas4free image, so you don't need an optical drive.

Oh, I see...
That makes sense then... Thanks a lot for the info!
And yes the n40l, even in Greece where I live, is rather cheap..
I got mine plus 8GB Ram for about £170 (200something euros) which, considering what it offers, is a great price...

I think you don't need a new NIC with the new release of N4F:
