ZFS & iSCSI for Windows usage - Questions

Post by SAngeli »

Hi,
I am thinking of using nas4free for my NAS and Web service needs.
I have three HDs of which the first one is for nas4free and hopefully web service (IDE 80GB) and two identical 1.5TB Sata HD for only NAS service.

Here are my questions:
1. is it possible to implement spindown disks and smart on zfs volume that will be using the entire two 1.5TB hd? If so how to? I wish to be able to spindown the two HD after 1 hour of inactivity.
2. Can I take advantages of the Web service and install CMS for web development testing? I was told that web services is only designed for nas4free website but I read it can be used in different ways.
3. When I create the iSCSI and create a partition from my Windows PC, everytime I bring nas4free server up (while my Windows PC is already running) how do I get the partition to show up on Windows? Will it be showing up automatically anytime the server becomes available or do I have to manually every time go through iSCSI in Windows'

Any useful ZFS guide and video reference is welcomed.

Thank you,
Spiro

I spin down the drives in my ZFS mirrors

web server [services] makes a specified path available to the web through a port other than 80 which is used for the GUI
so that 192.168.1.xxx:8080 will display the index if enabled or an HTTP file when correctly addressed
so load the finished HTTP files through a share and test it out

never used ISCSI and cannot offer advise
I use a share that is mapped as a network drive so as to show in the win file "tree" upon boot of the windows machine.
4 thread 3300 Mhz Intel i3, 1 TB ZFS mirror, available RAM 7.823 Gb, 64 bit NAS4Free 9.1.0.1 rev 573 [88 watts, 48 Mbps]
2 thread 1600 Mhz atom/ion, 1 TB ZFS mirror, available RAM 3.083 Gb, 64 bit NAS4Free-9.1.0.1 rev 573 [27 watts, 35 Mbps]
2 thread 3900 Mhz AMD A6-6400K, 2 TB ZFS Mirror, available RAM 7.557 Gb, 64 bit Nas4Free 9.3.0.2.1771 [89 watts, 68 Mbps]

I use a share that is mapped as a network drive so as to show in the win file "tree" upon boot of the windows machine.
I was thinking of doing the same but I face a major issue and do not know if it is related to Linux/Unix or not.
I was looking at an online QNAP manual trying to understand how is your NAS software (configuration and functionality) compared to theri system.
The major issue I have with Linux and Unix is that if I wish to benefit of the Windows trash, custom folder icons and Windows ACL if I use either ext4 or zfs I will not have this.
I question than how would QNAP offer these features cosnidering that for sure they use either a Linux or a Unix OS.

So, if it is impossible to do obtain these features the only solution that I would see if using either iSCSI so that it would let me (Windows user) format the NAS drive as NTFS but from Windows and not from Linux or create a Linux image file and than handle this as a HD and let still Windows format it as VHD.

How can a Windows user have a NAS server (hopefully nas4free) and at the same time also have these three features available?

Please advise as this is where I am stuck.
As for web services, I read another thread on nas4free (under webserver section) and am happy to notice that I can install CMS, MySQL (if needed), myphpadmin and so on. I would need to install the full version of nas4free and learn a bit.

Thank you,
Spiro

iSCSI should come up automatically. If not, just tick it on iSCSI Initiator under Windows.

I used it just for testings, but I have to say, that I use encryption and never switch off the NAS.
