Degraded pool

Post by codad »

Hello all... I have spent many weeks trying to figure out why the performance of my nas4free server (NAS4Free 9.0.0.1 (188)) is so very laggy when browsing shares from any of my Windows 7 machines, and was then thrown the following curveball over the weekend: my zfs pool is now degraded:

Code: Select all

pool: vd01
 state: DEGRADED
status: One or more devices are faulted in response to persistent errors.
Sufficient replicas exist for the pool to continue functioning in a
	degraded state.
action: Replace the faulted device, or use 'zpool clear' to mark the device
	repaired.
scan: scrub repaired 0 in 4h44m with 0 errors on Tue Nov 6 22:07:50 2012
config:

	NAME STATE READ WRITE CKSUM
	vd01 DEGRADED 0 0 0
	  raidz2-0 DEGRADED 0 0 0
	    da0 ONLINE 0 0 0
	    da1 FAULTED 6 59 0 too many errors
	    da2 ONLINE 0 0 0
	    da3 ONLINE 0 0 0
	    da4 ONLINE 0 0 0
	    da5 ONLINE 0 0 0
	    da6 ONLINE 0 0 0

errors: No known data errors
Now, I want to make clear that the degraded status appeared long after I tried figuring out why all my Win 7 machines browse the shares so slowly, and mention it only because I am wide open to considering fixes here (and maybe someone will notice why the win7 issue has been there... or likely not)

Here is my zfs setup as seen in Configuration - Detected

Code: Select all

Pools (1)
Name	Size	Used	Free	Dedup	Health	Mount point	AltRoot
vd01	12.6T	181G (1%)	8.66T	1.00x	DEGRADED -

Virtual devices (1)
Name	Type	Pool	Devices
vd01_raidz2_0	raidz2	vd01	/dev/da0, /dev/da1, /dev/da2, /dev/da3, /dev/da4, /dev/da5, /dev/da6
When I check the Status - Disks everything seems ok EXCEPT that there is no temp reading off the disk supporting da1 (seems odd)

Code: Select all

And I have the following from Pools - Virtual Device

Code: Select all

Name	Type	Description
vd01_raidz2_0	raidz2
vdHS	spare
Hopefully I set that up correctly, and I can now use the vdHS spare drive to simply replace the faulted da1? Or, should I go through a different process to try to resolve this degraded pool?

EDIT1: please be very specific with any recommendations / procedure you would suggest I follow.

Re: Degraded pool

Post by codad »

I just did a simple reboot of the machine, and now the following appears on the pools - information display

Code: Select all

Pool information and status
  pool: vd01
 state: DEGRADED
status: One or more devices could not be opened. Sufficient replicas exist for
the pool to continue functioning in a degraded state.
action: Attach the missing device and online it using 'zpool online'.
   see: http://www.sun.com/msg/ZFS-8000-2Q

	    da5 ONLINE 0 0 0

errors: No known data errors
And the SMART report is as follows (It looks like one of the drives is now simply gone!):

Re: Degraded pool

Post by codad »

Anyone know the exact process to replace the drive given what is now reported in the pool info screen? This doesn't seem to gel with one of the walkthroughs I read (since the drive is no longer even listed in the pool... just a series of numbers)

Ensure you wipe the new disk!

Also - there is another handbook you should be familiar with:
