[SOLVED] Upgrade from Embedded to Full

Post by paulg »

I'm going to get a cheap 60 GB SSD and make that my boot drive so I can install some additional packages. I searched but could not find procedures for moving from Embedded to Full. Is it possible to install full and restore my embedded config?

TIA,
Paul

I have installed from embedded to full by using 'live CD' clean install.
Procedure normal full install which makes the Hard disk reformated, in which I do not have Data or have to save or sacrifice them.
Before that I've made cofiguration save through GUI and restored it after full install.
I've found back again all my HDDs.
Only thing which is not pleasent in it, you will not have 'upgrades' possible thereafter directly from GUI !! you have to upgrade by using only live CD.

When promt for space to install , 384MB is default, please modify to your needs, and do not use Swap partition
12.1.0.4 - Ingva (revision 7743) on SUPERMICRO X8SIL-F 8GB of ECC RAM, 11x3TB disk in 1 vdev = Vpool = 32TB Raw size , so 29TB usable size (I Have other NAS as Backup)

Please explain, why should I not put a swap partition on the SSD disk?

Because is not needed, other installations that have only 1GB of RAM do not have swap , is a waste of space that never can be used, and that you can use for other use ( eg: to mount as temp parttition to store torrentns downloads or the DDBB of minidlna or fuppes to speed this procceses)

Thank you, I still do not quite understand so please excuse my questions if they sound redundent!

I'f I do a fresh FULL installation, will I be able to update through the GUI or will I always have to use a CD?

I just aquired a 160GB notbook drive which will become my boot drive. If I install the full version of N4F, will FreeBSD base OS upgrades happen from N4F releases or would I use

Code: Select all

freebsd-update
?

Thanks,
Pau

always you need to use CD ( update through GUI is reserved to embeded install).
paulg wrote: If I install the full version of N4F, will FreeBSD base OS upgrades happen from N4F releases
from NAS4Free you can see how many and what is updated on: http://nas4free.svn.sourceforge.net/vie ... /?view=log

PD: when promt for space in full install use 32GB you don't need to use more neverless the aditional packages that install, the rest (130GB) can be used to mount a UFS partition to store temp files, fuppes DDBB, your web page, files from Owncloud if you install it, etc...

When running a FULL installation you will have to use the Live CD to update, ONLY embedded installations can use the GUI to update

Thanks for the help folks. The upgrade was "near" flawless. The only issue was the drives shifted and the new drive became ada0 so I had to setup the ZFS pool again which was fairly painless and without data loss. I appreciate all the work and all the support!

Thanks,
Paul

I upgraded from embedded install to full install, too. I chose 64GB space when I installed but how I can use rest of the space now (I have 500GB notebook HDD)? After installation I added the disk ada0 from Disk Management, then added Mount Point (Disk ada0, type MBR, Partition 2, UFS filesystem, name Data) and I didn't format it. Now it will show Data disk as 64GB but how can I use this rest free space from 500GB notebook drive? EDIT: solved by installing fresh install.
I also restored settings from previous embedded installation and added ZFS pool (2TB disks in mirror). Then Management, Clear config and Import disks so Disk names are now correct.

Embedded install is also the prefered way for SSD's for a longer life of this hardware!

Embedded runs from ram to have way lesser write actions for a much longer life and can be easy and fast upgraded from GUI.

my 2 cents
System specs: XigmaNAS 11.2.0.4 -embedded on Samsung 860 EVO 256GB and Supermicro X10SL7-F w / Bios v3.2, IPMI v.03.86 / CPU E3-1241 v3 @ 3.50GHz - 32GB Crucial DDR3L 1600mhz ECC 1.35v , LSI 2308 on PH20.00.07.00 IT mode, Storage: 5x Western Digital Red (WD30EFRX) raidz

Development system is same system in virtualbox.

I already did a fresh install and now I can access this second partition so my problem is solved.
