Have to Restart CIFS/SMB

Post by DanAddz »

Hay guys,

I don't know if this is the right forum but ill soon find out,

I have a problem where every time i turn my Mac on it cant see my Share, i have added it to my account settings on my mac so that it will connect every time i log in, but for some reason it cant see it.

In order for me to see the Share i have to log into the Nas4Free Web GUI and go to CIFS/SMB and "Save & Restart" it. Then my Mac can see it.

is anyone else getting this problem?

Is there anyway i can fix it?

Cheers,
DanAddz

When you go into the WebGUI is SMB/CIFS still running? Has it crashed at some point before? Are there any errors in the logs? What about the logs on your Mac client, are there any errors there? Errors on the client will b most useful in determining what is causing this problem.

Al

ok i have got the logs for you and the status of my nas4free system for you to have a look.

SMB/CIFS still running = Yes
Has it Crashed Before = No
Are there any errors in the Logs = I have had a look but cannot find any. I have attached it below for you to have a look.
Any errors in the logs on my mac = I have had a look and i cant find anything, i could see that at one stage it said that "thenas" is unreachable.

Thanks for the help.

Cheers,

Dan

Hi DanAddz,

I have reviewed the status and log and can't find anything obvious that would cause the problem you describe. CIFS/SMB is running and I can see where you are restarting it, it does become the master browser as I would expect in your situation. As best I can tell the problem appears to be in your Mac client, when you wake it up or turn it on it may not be searching the network adequately to find the server. There is one way to determine for sure if it is the server or the client. Do you have any other PC's on the network? Do they exhibit the same behavior? If another computer does not behave the same way then we can rule out the server.
The other thing you can check is how the client is configured to login to the server. The error

normally indicates an address cannot be resolved, this could be for a couple of reasons. If the client trying to find the server before the network is connected? If you have added it to your account settings using the server name try adding it again using the IP address instead.

Let us know how it goes.

Regards,
Al

Hi Al,

I have Mapped thenas to my dads Windows 8 machine and he is having the same problem, when he turns on the computer he is unable to access thenas straight away, however like mine, he is able to access it after a few minutes.

I had my NAS set up on one HDD a while ago for testing purposes and it would connect to my Macbook pro and my Dads PC straight away.

Things i have changed since then:

I have upgraded my Macbook Pro from OSX Lion to OSX Mountain Lion
I have installed 5 Drives in my NAS all 2TB running as a RAID 5 ZFS

I thought that is could maybe be something to do with the new OS but it seems to happen to my dads PC

Could it have anything to do with running RAID 5 ZFS?

It is as if the NAS goes to sleep and then gets woken up as soon as a client tries to search for it. I looked into it and all of my HDDs are set to "Always on"

Thanks for your help.

Regards,

Dan
