Hi!
I would like to swap "ada" names on two of my disks. Is that possible? One is a jbod disk and the other is a disk in a raidz.
This is the old XigmaNAS forum in read only mode,
it will taken offline by the end of march 2021!
I like to aks Users and Admins to rewrite/take over important post from here into the new fresh main forum!
Its not possible for us to export from here and import it to the main forum!

Re: Swap device names
the ada names are bound to your available physical ports.
sata1 is ada0, if it's your first port. sometimes it's labeled as sata0 on the mobo.
but beware, if external satacard is used, these will be the first ports!
so you need to replug your disks on the mobo to achieve your goal.
try to write it down on a paper to avoid confusion.
i guess, you have data written on these disks. be prepared with a backup, before you do something you could regret.

Re: Swap device names
Thank you for your reply!
Though... It seems that it isn't bound to physical ports.
If i physically detach my raidz disks my jbod disks gets the names ada0 and ada1.
It's like this without moving physical places:
all:
ada0: Jbod disk1
ada1: RaidZ
ada2: Jbod disk2
ada3: RaidZ
ada4: RaidZ
ada5: RaidZ
Just Jbod attached:
ada0: Jbod disk1
ada1: Jbod disk2
Just RaidZ attached:
ada0: RaidZ
ada1: RaidZ
ada2: RaidZ
ada3: RaidZ

Re: Swap device names
Is right, ada(x) is assigned not to physical SATA port, is assigned to first, second, etc... drives detected , like Windows does assing letters ( C: , D: , E: ) etc.
This is a know behaviour that despite when you add a disk to existing board, and if you search forum is know a shift disk sindrome.
eg: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=846&p=2497&hilit=+shift+disk#p2497
You allways can use "Clear config & import disk" button in web gui to restore to correct values. or use "labels" to identify disk.
EG: in some industrial grade pool installations, SN is used as label (glabel), to identify disk easy.
For home use is supposed not very usefull , because home user do not add / move disk and normally have a low number of disk so identify damaged one can be simple, but is agood and recomended way to label disk prior to use in big pools.

Re: Swap device names
Ok, thankyou!
Clear config and import does the same all over again, and I have even tried to reset factory settings and rescan but it's always the same.
All disks are working as they should and the speeds are awesome in my opinion. I just want to tidy it up a little by listing the harddrives in the right order.
Like I said if i remove my raidz the jbods shows correct, but when i add the raidz the ada1 info get red and after a rescan it's the same again.
Oh well... If there isn't an easy way to change it I can live with it. As said, it works very well indeed!

Re: Swap device names
Maybe a fresh install will solve it. Is it possible to import the zfs pool without config file to eliminate the risk of disks taking the same names again? Or force save a config when only the jbod is attached? It seems like the disks remeber what names they had earlier.

Re: Swap device names
you can do a new fresh install , import disk and import pool, no problem, there are a option to synchronize info on ZFS disk to webGUI. if that is your plan, first export your pool (to ensure a good import later).
