Dear Community,
I think it would be helpful to create a list of of working hardware, although I am aware that every hardware which is running freeBSD is able to run NAS4Free.
But as I read through the forum a lot the past days, there seem to be mainly three type of user who build NASes:
a) based on leftover equipment of 'old' PCs (looks like this is the majority here)
b) based on new low-power consuming boards (the next big group)
c) high performance NAS with big RAM and CPUs
Some of the systems get upgraded with new components like NICs, RAM, and additional storage controllers etc
In my case I was running out of SATA ports and needed to buy another controller card and ended up buying one without knowing if it was supported.
Luckily it worked, although it was not recognized by the 'PartedMagic' Linux distribution which I wanted to use prior to test the controller and HDDs. :-/
So I thought a little list of already working components would be helpful for buying decision and if someone wants to upgrade the system.
I can contribute as follows:
Mainboards tested:
Asrock ION330, Atom 330, 4xSATA II onboard + 2xeSATA, max 4GB RAM (DDR3 1066) worked out of the box
Asrock E350M1, AMD E350 , 4xSATA III onboard + 1xeSATA, max 16GB RAM (DDR3 1066) worked out of the box
storage controller
Dawicontrol DC-624e, 4 port SATA III (RAID) controller, PCIe, works out of the box - as long as RAID BIOS is not configured (Firmware 4.20 - 2013)
DeLock SATA2 PCIe 70137, 2 port SATA II controller, works when the ROM gets flashed and the controller is set to NOT use RAID 0 or RAID 1 (flash tool included but with no further description)
Cheeers,
Crowi
