One of zpools disapeared

Post by Przemo-c »

Recently i've switched from frenas 0.7 to nas4free 9.1
I've recreated my original config. and imported previous zfs pool then I've added nev virtual device 5x3tb drives raidz2 (4kb sectors) and created a new pool.
I've rebooted it few times in the begining to test if everyting came back up and it was ok. I've been using it for about a week (tinkering with parameters for performance and testing it without disabling zil or sync) . Now after a reboot the old pool (not upgraded) is here but new pool (zfspool2) disapeared.
(i've rebooted it few times in the beggining to test if everyting came back up and it was ok)

In gui i have virtual device looking as it should (dont know how to check vdev from command line)
and zfspool 2 has every column unknown.
When i go to tools->detected i see no mention of zfspool2 the drives seem ok(at boot not sure about .nop thingStatus|Disks

I've tried to do
zpool import zfspool2
no pools
zpool import
blank and no new zpool
zpool import -D
nothing.
when i went to disks->management and did the clear config and import disks all drives involved in raidz2 for zfspool2 changed from zfspool device or something like that to unknown or unformatted.

Is there a way to recover from such situation?
I've searched the forum but didnt find any solution.
I dont think data would be corrupted as i've restared the system just after midnight and there was no usage and i think it would be pretty unlikely for it to corrupt all of the raidz2 devices all at once?zpool import zfspool2zpool import zfspool2
Is there an issue with 4k/521B sectors or something ??
I'm quite green when it comes to zfs aand i thread carefullly .... I'm experienced with GNU Linux
here are come information output on original config loaded

Re: One of zpools disapeared

Post by raulfg3 »

Not sure for your post, but I asumme that your new pool do not contain data (you only use it to test performance & stability), so recreate it, can't be a problem.

posible cause of dissapear can be ZIL play, ; if you enable one disk as ZIL , and then detach this disk from pool , you loose all data in pool.

really is not normal to lose an entire pool, but if is true that you do not lose data, recreate raidZ2 pool.

PD: Check that 3TB disk are in good state , revise S.M.A.R.T. and cables, all disk can be detected when you use "clear config & import Disk" button.
12.1.0.4 - Ingva (revision 7743) on SUPERMICRO X8SIL-F 8GB of ECC RAM, 11x3TB disk in 1 vdev = Vpool = 32TB Raw size , so 29TB usable size (I Have other NAS as Backup)

Re: One of zpools disapeared

Post by Przemo-c »

The new pool was in use but ity was new so backups were recent and the rest of the date was resent to nas so not a huge deal about loss ... but pretty darn concerning about relaiability. thae zfspool2 (the one tkat disapeared) didnt have dedicated ZIL only one raidz2 pool 5x3tb. when i rescan and import disks all of them are online but instead of zfs pool device or something like that it goes to unknown on unformated.
I dodnt recreate it yet (the backup data was transfered to old pool) because i wanted to recover from this problem so i could know if i could do it again if it happened again.
Is it possible to make sure that that kind of problem wont happen? Maybe backup disks partition tables or something ...
disks are new cables also smart didnt show any concerning information.
But once i physicaly get to the server i'll check ithem on another pc.

zdb -l on every device show tha same thing ... failed to unpack level x
is there anything more i can check about the discs content wether it was something with partitions or check if the data is still there etc?
btw of course this happend on my first free day in months ;-)
