Re: install on zfs mirror
is not a recomended way to install nas4free
Please install on one disk, and save config, reinstall and restore config if fail, do not use mirror in boot device.

Re: install on zfs mirror
a true chicken/egg problem
if your OS is in a file system that must be running on the OS
it is also NOT wise to store anything needed to recover the NAS on the NAS
with industrial grade flash I have never had a failure.

Re: install on zfs mirror
as raulfg3 said.. its best to install on one disk.. But you are really wasting money installing on an ssd.. all you need is a USB stick or CF card. This is not like a traditional operating system where you would need fast drives for your OS to be faster. What you need is a decent CPU and 1GB of ram per TB of Data especially if your doing zfs. I've had great performance striping disks and using link aggregation. For $400 I took an existing Dell optiplex 760 which is only a core2duo 2.8 with 4GB ram and I was getting network speeds of 180MB/s which was basically having 3 computers downloading a single large file at the same time at the max speed of their system around 60MB/s via ethernet. SSDs though are a waste.
If you want a mirror get a dual CF adaptor and mirror them together. If you want some automation you can setup a cron job to automatically save the config file to a local drive or remote server. I currently have mine in a folder on my nas that is replicated to the backup nas for redundancy.
