Upgrade full 0.72_8191 to 9.1.0.1.636

Post by dboy »

So, I understand I am stressing your patience...but I can't find exactly this information in the forum. Sorry.

I have a 0.72_8191 system, a full installation on a IDE system disk and data on a ZFS Raidz5 with 4*2TB disks.

I want to upgrade by using this route:
1. Backup the 0.72_8191 configuration using the web gui on a client computer
2. On the freenas server command line
zpool export tank
3. Shutdown the 0.72_8191 system, take out the IDE system disk, replace it with a second empty IDE disk. (and use the old ide disk as a return route ...)
4. Install Nas4free 9.1.0.1.636 full installation on the new empty IDE disk
5. Connect to it using the web gui
6. Restore using the config file on the client computer
7. On the Nas4free system command line do a
zpool import tank

Then the plan is to try that everything works for a few days and then when I am reasonably confident, upgrade the ZFS from v15 to v28.

Finished!

Is this correct?
I just cant find any info if this route is documented.
It is really not an "upgrade" as such, but rather a new install and then doing a restore using an older version backup.

I need a full installation since I want to install the dlna server serviio in a jail, and maybe some other stuff later on. I have the idea that it is a good idea to use a full install for serviio.

System:
MB: MSI GF615-P33
CPU: Athlon II X2 3GHz
RAM: 2*2GB

(I know am short on RAM for the size of my ZFS pool, but typically very few users and you folks seem optimistic it will work so will try...
I currently experience transfer speed of 7 - 10 MB/s depending on average file size. )

Better if you do not import old config ( can probably work) but is more clean to use new button in Disks|Management "Clear config & import Disk" once done go to Disks|ZFS|Configuration|Detected and import your pool ( push button twice if first time fail).

Once done you only need to enable your services ( SMB, SSH, FTP, etc.. ) like you have in FreeNAS

I know , you need more time to configure all by hand and probably you need to know how you have it configured in your previos freeNAS version ( to do it I save a jpg of all webGUI pages ( like SMB, SMB shars, etc...), but is clean and secure.

Of course you can try your aproach first time and test how works, and later if somethings goes bad, you can try my suggest.

Thanks, will read your two links.

You may be right that it is safer to install a new system, activate and configure all services, create new users, import the ZFS pool and set file ownership and file security for all files in the file system....

The part I think is a nuisance is to create users, and then have to go through and set ownership and file security on all files in the file system. Sure, it can be automated, but I would really like it to be possible to do this another way...

This version supports upgrading from FreeNAS 0.7.2 or 0.7.5.
The supported lowest config version is 8.9. (0.7.2.5246)

Also, restoring FreeNAS config is never supported.
This seem to indicate that it is indeed NOT supported to make a fresh install of nas4free 9.1.0.1.636 and then make a restore using the config file from 0.7.2.8191

So, what is correct. Will it work to restore the configuration or not?

The two links suggested by raulfg3 did not really give info on this particular subject.

So, to report on my (nonexistent) progress:

I made a backup of the configuration. Removed the system disk, inserted a new disk, installed the .636 full on it, rebooted...connected to it via the web interface.

Then tried to make a restore using the config file with the result:

Code: Select all

The configuration could not be restored. Invalid file format.
So, I guess this is a dead end... as far as I understand.

...too bad...

I guess the other option would be to try to clone the original disk, and then try to upgrade to 9.1.0.1_636 instead.
Not sure how to do that in FreeNAS 0.72 ...

Just a quick post to report that after some deliberation I did as suggested.
I saved print screens of most of the dialogues in the web interface.
Did a shutdown, removed the cables to the ZFS disks just for safety
Swithced to a fresh IDE disk
Installed 9.1.0.1.636
Manually configured it using the printscreens
Took the system down, reattached the ZFS disks, booted and imported the disks.

Although I did not think this to be a very elegant upgrade, it worked. I did some mistakes in the configuration, but finally all clients, media players etc seem to work ok with the new installation.

I will probably run with the old ZFS version a month or so before I will upgrade to v28. Not sure whether I should do it at all, but will probably do it anyway.

Congratulations.

yes is not elegant , but is safe, and you only need to do if upgrade from FreeNAs to Nas4Free, next updates / Upgrades, can be easy from Cd or USB ( Now you can boot Nas4Free from CD to install into a disk , you onli need to download, ned USB.Live version).

I suggest, what you say, do not upgrade until are totally sure you don't need to revert to old FreeNAS , ance you are sure, ugrade from v15 to v28 is really easy and trivial.
