Putting img file on USB using linux?
Can someone tell me how, or point me towards a tutorial, I can put NAS4Free-x64-LiveUSB-9.1.0.1.636.img (is this even the right file?) onto a usb stick so that I can boot and install it? Im very "noobish" about Linux but that machine has the only usb imputs I have access to. Thank you.

not as you ask, but, do you read wiki?: http://wiki.nas4free.org/doku.php?id=faq:0037
12.1.0.4 - Ingva (revision 7743) on SUPERMICRO X8SIL-F 8GB of ECC RAM, 11x3TB disk in 1 vdev = Vpool = 32TB Raw size , so 29TB usable size (I Have other NAS as Backup)

Re: Putting img file on USB using linux?
use google to understand the power of dd= http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dd_%28Unix%29
Or use other ways to put the image using a Windows PC ( physdiskwrite-0_5_2-physgui-eng.zip , etc...).
Or finally boot from Cd and install from CD to USB ( Full or embeded).

Re: Putting img file on USB using linux?
I gave up on this and used a Ubuntu tutorial to do everything I needed. "Use Google" or "Do something completely different than what you're asking" isn't very helpful. I searched for a tutorial or expatiation of how to do what seems like a fairly common task for this specific distro and came up empty, so I came here hoping for more help. If the intention is to keep people unfamiliar with these commands that way, then this was a good job.

Re: Putting img file on USB using linux?
I say previosly that read FAQ 0037, there are several examples of Howto install Nas44Free ( From a CD, from a USBKey)Roseysdaddy wrote:Can someone tell me how, or point me towards a tutorial, I can put NAS4Free-x64-LiveUSB-9.1.0.1.636.img (is this even the right file?) onto a usb stick so that I can boot and install it? But perhaps do you need read documentation: http://wiki.nas4free.org/doku.php?id=do ... n_overview
Is not really dificult to find if you use some key like: "NAS4Free install" or something simmilar
other examples: viewtopic.php?f=55&t=2106

Re: Putting img file on USB using linux?
Again, the FAQ is not a tutorial. I'm not an IT professional nor an experienced Linux user. In the future, step-by-step instructions (tutorial) would probably be valuable to people interested in this program but not adept at the commands.

Re: Putting img file on USB using linux?
using the target NAS computer or some other computer I always use the live CD burned from the down loaded .iso
to install the NAS4Free from the CD on to the boot medium. It is easy and works on more than just USB flash.
YMMV

Re: Putting img file on USB using linux?
thats awesome, but the issue is the NAS doesn't have a CD drive. Thats why i asked about a tutorial for USB and not the CD.

Re: Putting img file on USB using linux?
Roseysdaddy, as I understand, you want to burn NAS4Free into USB pendrive under Ubuntu.
Small how to for you.
1. download embedded image from SF
For x64 : http://sourceforge.net/projects/nas4fre ... .1.636.img
For x86 : http://sourceforge.net/projects/nas4fre ... .1.636.img
I will continue for x64 image.
2. Your image stored into Download folder - move it into home folder with mouse right click
3. rename image NAS4Free-x64-embedded-9.1.0.1.636.img to NAS4Free-x64-embedded-9.1.0.1.636.img.gz, just add .gz
4 connect usb pen to computer
5 open terminal and type into . Ubuntu will ask password - type it
6 check your usb - about his name

My usb connected as /dev/sdb
7 Close gparted screen
8. Type command
9 Write image to USB. Type
value of= -- your flash disk name. In my case /dev/sdb
10 Your usb now ready for use - unplug it from Ubuntu comp and use as NAS4Free system disk
PS
I prepared USB pendrive now and copy -paste command from terminal. In my case, my new NAS4Free work now

Re: Putting img file on USB using linux?
one does not need to use the NAS hardware for this, any computer that will boot from a cd will doRoseysdaddy wrote:that's awesome, but the issue is the NAS doesn't have a CD drive. That's why i asked about a tutorial for USB and not the CD.
CAVEAT
do be careful to write the OS to the boot medium [in this case USB drive]
since the cd will write to most any medium care must be taken so as not to overwrite the computer's usual HDDs
for my cold stand by [an old dell] I hung a optical drive out the side, on the primary IDE line, and wrote to IDE flash on the secondary
since only the primary line booted, I then moved the flash to the primary IDE and connected the storage drives to the secondary IDE.
then I completed the setup
lots of older hardware will not boot USB but for those that will, and have no available CD
in the past I have "borrowed" the electronics from a USB IDE drive case to plug in a CD drive

Re: Putting img file on USB using linux?
@alexey123 ....WOW! now that is a tutorial. Thank you very much. Its been very frustrating trying to figure this stuff out, but those instructions seem like something I could show my grandfather and he could understand, something I wish more people in the linux community understood.
