NAS4FREE full OS Install Error - Option 3

Post by flipflip »

Code: Select all

Invalid format

FreeBSD/x86 boot
Default: 0:ad(0,a)/boot/kernel/kernel
boot:
No /boot/kernel/kernel

FreeBSD/x86 boot
Default: 0:ad(0,a)/boot/kernel/kernel
boot:
My setup:

Advent T9306. 2 Hard Drives (1 x 360GB SATA & 1 x 80GB IDE). I wanted to run the installation using 'option 3' from the 80GB drive. The installation completed via LiveCD using version NAS4Free-x86-LiveCD-9.1.0.1.636. However, when I adjusted my BIOS to boot from the 80GB drive I get the above error.

The 360GB drive still has a authentic version of XP on it. I was hoping to get NAS4FREE functioning on the 80GB before formatting the second drive.

I have tried booting from USB, although the defualt mobo (MSI 7091 v2) bios version does not provide USB legacy support, which makes it unable to boot from Removable USB storage.

If anyone can offer any help it would be much appreciated.

Format 80GB drive in windows ( FAT32) to be sure that IDE Disk is in good state.

Disconnect 320GB Disk, so only 80GB disk are in your System.
configure BIOS to boot in this order:

First CD
Second HD (80GB IDE Disk)

Boot From Live CD, use option 9:
"Welcome to NAS4Free"
"*********************"
1) Assign Interface
2) Set LAN IP address
3) Reset WebGUI password
4) Reset to factory defaults
5) Ping host
6) Shell
7) Reboot system
8) Shutdown system
9) Install/Upgrade to hard drive/flash device, etc.
Then use option 3:
Install"
"*********************"
1) Install 'embedded' OS on HDD/Flash/USB
2) Install 'embedded' OS on HDD/Flash/USB + DATA + SWAP partition
3) Install 'full' OS on HDD + DATA + SWAP partition
4) upgrade 'embedded' OS from CDROM
5) Upgarde 'full' OS from CDROM
6) Upgrade and convert 'full' OS to 'embedded'
When promt, select 2048MB instead 384MB for the size of boot partition, DO NOT use swap .

This time you can boot from 80GB Disk and have a second free partition of 78GB to Format/mount for your use ( I use it to store logs, torrents, fuppes database,etc....)

If all works fine, and you can boot, is time to add other disk, like 320GB, once added revise boot order in BIOS.
12.1.0.4 - Ingva (revision 7743) on SUPERMICRO X8SIL-F 8GB of ECC RAM, 11x3TB disk in 1 vdev = Vpool = 32TB Raw size , so 29TB usable size (I Have other NAS as Backup)

Thank you for your reply.

I booted in Windows XP, and used SwissKnife to format the 80GB drive as CMD prompt was unable to format a FAT32 partition larger than 32GB.

I then disconnected the SATA 360GB, altered the BIOS to 1) CD, 2) HD (80GB IDE)

When booting from the CD the CD Loader starts, but then it gets to the following line.. it idles and stops making progress:

Code: Select all

Loading /boot/defaults/loader.conf
/boot/kernel/kernel text=0xd5c42c
I have left it at this stage for a couple of hours. What do you think could cause this? Im pretty sure the bootable liveCD is not corrupt, as I have ran an install from it previously.

try to disconect 7-in-1 Card Reader , if still fails, you can use other PC to install nas4Free , not only the NAS ( You can use 80GB Disk And a CD-Reader in other PC to do first install).

also try a different cd drive and different cable

I have junked several cd drives, they just wear out, some just wont boot.
pitched plenty of old cables too, as not worth the chance when another worked fine.

be sure the device you are trying to boot from is on the primary IDE line
the one you are writing to on the secondary
move to primary when adding the storage drive

my old dell [cold stand by] will not boot from the secondary IDE line

Ok, removed the card reader, swapped IDE cable and altered master and slave slot, and burnt a new CD.. and it worked!

I then configured the Network interface to use my LAN (fwe0), and updated the Network IP to my local gateway (192.168.0.1), and left DNS blank for now. No DHCP!

In order to check that the device was connected to my network I used option 5 (Ping Host), and successfully pinged 2 devices on my netwook (no packets lost).

However, when I try to reach the WebGUI on the IP quoted on my boot screen 192.168.1.250 I'm unable to load the page. I have tried Chrome & Firefox a couple of times, and rebooted the server inbetween but still no luck. Am I missing something painfully obvious here?

EDIT*

Ive noticed 192.168.1.250 is outside of the IP range set by my router, so I assigned it a dynamic address of 192.168.0.250 & altered this accordingly under option 2 within NAS4FREE. When I make this IP reservation, NAS4FREE fails to connect to my router and Im unable to ping any other devices.

However, when NAS4FREE auto assigns itself 192.168.1.250, the router assigns itself the IP 192.168.0.250. When its in this state I have tried to access WebGUI using both addresses, but to no avail.

There must be a way around this..

EDIT 2

As my router auto-assigned 192.168.0.250 irrespective of the static IP I set for the NAS, I decided to turn DHCP on. This allowed the NAS to remain connected on 192.168.0.250 without trying to force the IP on the device. Obviously long term this isn't ideal, but for the meantime it will allow me to configure more of the settings.

Thank you for all of the help!

I always do step2 starting with DHCP
you will get an "in range address"
if need be you can re use it as a static address
but most modern routers will reassign the same IP address to the same presented mac address
