The only tool I really do miss is mc.
It is of course not essential for a NAS, but makes navigating around the file system
so much easier - especially while on the console or during ssh sessions from Windows...
This is the old XigmaNAS forum in read only mode,
it will taken offline by the end of march 2021!
I like to aks Users and Admins to rewrite/take over important post from here into the new fresh main forum!
Its not possible for us to export from here and import it to the main forum!

Re: Midnight Commander
I'm aware of this method, but don't quite like to have part of the system on the data pool.
It might be useful though, if embedded install doesn't waste the entire flash stick,
like it does now...
Why not have it install in a slice /dev/da0s1, of a certain size, for example and have the
possibility to utilize the remaining space (add new slices and do as one pleases)?
If the slice is large enough to allow for future extension, say 256M, it should not be
a problem to upgrade embedded installs without destroying any other data on the stick.
(This will need 2 stage approach to "install" the image, but nothing fancy)
This way all system files will at least be on the same device, not to mention flash sticks
don't come in less than 4G nowadays - it has been a while since I last saw any smaller.

Re: Midnight Commander
Yes is not a problem to upgrade, but if you need to reinstall ( due to corrupt file or usb Stick), you lose your second slice.svily0 wrote:Why not have it install in a slice /dev/da0s1, of a certain size, for example and have the

I have recent bad experience whit this, I test to boot from a SSD and only use 2GB for boot slice partition and use the rest to store jails, when I need to do a new fresh install I lose installed jails.
My lesson: I use actually second slice to store temp files and temp torrent downloads, DDBB like fuppes or minidlna, and so on, and store my jails in data pool, so in new reinstalls I do not lose anything important, only temp and logs files.
