Re: samba 4
Samba 4 upgrade means also that users has to upgrade the 256MB media for embedded installations to a minimum of 512MB.
I think the upgrade should than be done for 9.1.0.2 or 9.2.0.2 series and not faster.
lockout the 256MB or less keys will afect more users than you think.
Yes, i know replacements are cheap, but thats not the point.

Re: samba 4
Can you build a different branch with Samba4 in it as it would be able to use the bandwidth i have more effectively.

OK, thanks for the reply. I'm keeping my hopes up that it's going at least somewhat smoothly since developing and upgrading can be a real pain in the ***.RedAntz wrote:It's WIP.

RedAntz :-
My apologies. I accidentally deleted your post. I thought I was replying with quotes

As per your question :-
It's in testing now. However, it will not be available in NAS4Free 9.x due to the huge increase of size required. It is under review to see what can be excluded to keep size down.
It is planned to be made available for v10. I will make sure that it is a straightforward upgrade if you restore config from 9.2.

Re: samba 4
Red,
is there a tentative roadmap for 9.x -> 10? (i mean, will it jump for 9.2 to 10 or we'll see .3 .4 .5 .6 .7 for example)
the other question that got lost is: IF i wanted to upgrade to samba 4 on an existing install of 9.2(full install, embedded would be more complex) would it be very hard to do?(i.e. broken dependencies, webadmin?, etc)

Re: samba 4
No. After 9.3 release (coming soon) we'll aim for v10.(Note it is Samba 4.1, not Samba 4.0)Eliminateur wrote:Red,

If you upgrade from 9.2 to 10 it *should* be straightforward, as configuration will be updated from config file restore.

Re: samba 4
i think we're on the wrong page, i didnt mean upgrading from n4f 9.2 to 10
i meant, taking my current 9.2 install and upgrading ONLY SAMBA to 4.1 (a DIY upgrade)

Some update on the webgui are required to run Samba 4.1, e.g. config for smb.conf will become smb4.conf

Re: samba 4
I again request that boot partition size for embedded installs be controlled by the installer:
viewtopic.php?f=56&t=5869
With Samba 4.x in the future for N4F (and its need for more HDD space), such an option will eliminate the need to do a fresh install everytime there are major N4F upgrades.
For example, upgrading to 9.2.0.1 would have been much simpler if my boot HDD already had a larger system partition. And with an unreliable CD Drive, my otherwise fine older laptop doesn't like fresh installs.

BTW, for NF 9.3/10 are you planning on porting to FBSD 10 as well?.
i see there are some very interesting additions like: ZFS L2ARC compression, new RE driver with fixes(and boy it needs it...) that thing about vmio unmapped buffers, etc.
looking very forward to new releases, i wish i could help in the development since i like NF a LOT since i discovered some years back but i have "google" *nix knowledge and that's hardly dev material (i do have a lot of inteesting/old hw to test)
