MPIO and DSM - device specific Module

Post by mshanley »

Hi,

I am new to NAS4FREE... I tried a few other nas out there including freenas and I like this one better. :)

I have a 24TB san I am building and learning about iSCSI MPIO. "Learning project"

I have a windows server 2012 connected with 2 nic to the nas4free(diff subnets). I am needing some help on setting up MPIO.

I have a volume / extent setup and I have it connected to windows 2012. I can see and use this drive G:\

However I am not able to figure out how to get MPIO working. Does anyone have some steps on what I need to do on both sides so I can actually use MPIO.

Most of the stuff I have been able to dig up is just iscsi targets... nothing explaining what is needed to be config for MPIO to work.

If I have the G:\ drive mapped and disconnect one of the network cables the drive should still be available and im not seeing that.

Other question is DSM install / Config (part of MPIO) when installing in windows, MPIO has a box for DSM.

Any help would be appreciated.. as I need to broaden my scope into the storage area..

thanks

Flattery will get you everywhere!!!

What does your current iSCSI portal config look like on the Nas4Free target?

Hi,
This is the steps I took.
Added all 24 drives (vdevs)to system formatted ea with zfs
Created 1 pool using zfs raidz2 with ssd cache and ssd log ended up with 18TB with 15.8TB useable
Created a 100GBvol for testing
added the 4 nics
bg0 10.0.10.1 - connected to windows 2012 nic 10.0.10.2
bg1 10.0.20.1 - connected to windows 2012 nic 10.0.20.2
em0 10.0.30.1 - not connected yet
em1 10.0.40.1 - not connected yet

Services Iscsi target
settings
enabled iscsi target checkbox named iqn.nas4free9.workgroup
left rest as default

Portal - added nics
10.0.10.1:3260
10.0.20.1:3260
10.0.30.1:3260
10.0.40.1:3260

Targets
Extent - created extent0 /dev/zvol/Pool1/100GBVol
Target - iqn.nas4free9.workgroup:100GB

Initiators
10.0.10.0/24
10.0.20.0/24
10.0.30.0/24
10.0.40.0/24

AUTH = no security at this point

Windows 2012 2 nics 10.0.10.2, 10.0.20.2
added iscsi scanned for portal..
it showed up.. went to device manager put it online and formatted as Drive G:\
I am able to write to a delete from drive G:\

I know your supposed to be able to add 2 connections but i'm missing something as I am only able to add it 1 time.
I think that something else has to be done on nas4free to enable 2 connections to the volume/extent?

I should be able to disconnect 1 cable and drive will be there, then put back and disconnect other cable and drive still be there.
1 fails and drive disappears..

Mpio not installed yet
I did try this but removed it as I could not figure out what to do about the DSM config..

That setup looks mostly good.

Did you install the MPIO feature yet?
To add MPIO on a server running Windows Server 2012
1. Open Server Manager. To open Server Manager, click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Server Manager.
2. In the Server Manager tree, click Features.
3. In the Features area, click Add Features.
4. In the Add Features Wizard, on the Select Features page, select the Multipath I/O check box, and then click Next.
5. On the Confirm Installation Selections page, click Install.
6. When the installation has completed, on the Installation Results page, click Close. When prompted to restart the computer, click Yes.
7. After restarting the computer, the computer finalizes the MPIO installation.
8. Click Close.
Once this is done, it looks like you can do something along the lines of this:
http://www.server-log.com/blog/2011/7/2 ... g-mpi.html

The above HOWTO has a Microsoft server as the iSCSI target in part one, but that is arbitrary, since part two covers the part you're concerned with. From what I can tell, Server 2012 isn't that much different. But, you can always read the guide: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download ... x?id=30450

You don't need to worry about DSM, because you are using the Microsoft initiator. If you had an iSCSI initiator from a different manufacturer, then you would ensure you had the DSM for that manufacturer.
