Pool status is 'Unknown'

Post by BadMike »

I have a 5 disk RaidZ2 array, all the disks appear healthy but the pool status is unknown.

How can I recover my data, do I delete and recreate the pool?

Output from the report generator is below:

NAS4Free 9.1.0.1 (revision 724) x64-embedded
ALASKA A M I Intel(R) Core(TM) i3-3225 CPU @ 3.30GHz 8678MiB RAM

mem 0xf7c00000-0xf7c0ffff irq

Any help much appreciated!

How can I recover my data, do I delete and recreate the pool? NO! that will destroy your data....

You'll need to provide more info if you want help. More system info and what was going on when it stopped working ect...
Get to the command line and give us the out put of the following for starters.

zpool status -v
zpool list -v

I was copying some files to the NAS when it rebooted, when it came back the pool was gone.

I have run the two commands you suggested, the output doesn't look very promising:

$ zpool status -v
no pools available

$ zpool list -v
no pools available

cat /var/run/dmesg.boot it will be a big long list. post it all. We are looking to see what hard drives, the system is seeing at boot.

zpool import see what this command returns.

VPoolR5Z2 is that the name of the zpool you want to access?

zpool import VPoolR5Z2 try that. If that don't work. you'll have to wait till someone with more knowledge than me reads this thread. One thing, dont use '-f' during the import without getting back to us.

Now to sort out the nas4free GUI after you import, we will have to ask other people on the forum. I dont really use the GUI for ZFS.
The next question is why the zpool was unknown in the first place.

Thanks for all your help so far.

zpool import VPoolR5Z2
Cannot import 'VpoolR5Z2' : pool may be in use from other system use '-f' to import anyway

I have resisted the urge to use '-f' as you suggested.

Cheers

hi,

Disk | ZFS | Configuration | Detected

Are they identical?

Have you backed up your configuration (config.xml)?

zpool import VPoolR5Z2
Cannot import 'VpoolR5Z2' : pool may be in use from other system use '-f' to import anyway

That error message looks ok.

Go ahead and use -f

zpool import -f VPoolR5Z2

cannot import 'VPoolR5Z2' : I/O error
Destroy and re-create the pool from a backup source.

I am guessing that's not good...

I didn't even realise I could backup the pool, needless to say I don't have a backup.

First restore the configuration

second zpool import-f without argument or zpool import -D without argument

You can also check your sata cables

thirdly if it is not good, answer my first question:
Disk | ZFS | Configuration | Detected
Disk | ZFS | Configuration | Current
Are they identical?

Has system been rebooted since problem started? Am going to guess no! Try a reboot and i thinking it might crash at boot.
Power off the system, check all the connection in the system.
Reboot and try an import again.

Next, if that dont work. Power off and disconnect one drive, reboot and try to import. Repeat this by disconnecting one drive at a time. Hopefully zfs will be able to import the zpool minus a problem drive. Once its imported with minus one drive, reboot and reconnect the problem drive, zfs should them be able to sort its self out from there.

If that dont work, your in trouble....

I've been through the doc and tried pretty much everything, but no joy.

I've accepted I am going to have to rebuild my NAS4Free box and restore all the files from a backup.

The big question is what can I do differently next time to stop this happening again? I am beginning to the F in ZFS stands for Fragile...

I always use mirror=RAID1.
If u really need performace use raid10, but never raid 5 or raidZ. Hard to rebuild, and can fragile.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Non-standa ... els#RAID-Z
"RAID-Z is not actually a kind of RAID..."

and never ever forget backup regularly!!!!

ps: ZFS is great, but u need memory (and cpu).

Did you try this?

i dont think this will work, because of the error appeared after a reboot while copying to a raidz. there is no bad drive, it was a software error.

I dont think there will be a hardware fault either. However i stand by what i suggested, it will force the software to go at things from a different angle so to speak.

I tried with each drive, no joy.

So... Given that I have an i3 CPU, 8GB Ram and 5x3TB WD Greens, what would you recommend as my best config?

Ideally I want to access via iSCSI with reasonable read performance (write is not so critical).

Apologies if this is going off topic now!
