Utterly slow SMB/CIFS network * Fixed *
Hello
I got a returning problem with my SMB shares on my Nas fopr Free server. Some of the files i transferring extremely slow, we are talking about 36 KB per second on a 100 MB/s network. When I use SCP the files are transfered with 11 Mb/s.
Some of the other files are transferring around 6 - 9 MB/s with the SMB protocol and others with less than 100 KB/s.
I tried running fsck on the disk and it replied no errors on filesystem I tried restarting the server with no change in speed.
I cant seem to figure out what is causing the problem, maybe some of you in here know how to get the speed up and running.
Thanks in advance
Michael

Re: Utterly slow SMB/CIFS network
Try enabling sendfile and AIO in the cifs page. You can also tweak the buffer sizes, but I have found the defaults to be ok.
NAS 1: NAS4Free 9.3.0.2 x64 embedded, Intel Core 2 E8400, 8GB, 6 x WD Green 1TB in RAIDZ2, Highpoint 2720 SAS x 8 card 6Gbps
NAS 2: NAS4Free 10.2.0.2 x64 embedded, Intel Core i3-3220, 8GB, 7 x WD Green 750GB in RAIDZ1, onboard SATA 3Gbps

Re: Utterly slow SMB/CIFS network
Hi all and thanks for your replys
@ Kiss.daniel
The hardwáre it is running on is a HP Proliant Micro server @ NAS4Free 9.1.0.1 (revision 724) x64-embedded; HP ProLiant AMD Athlon(tm) II Neo N36L Dual-Core Processor 992MiB RAM - with a Gugabut network card.
My CIFS/SMB settings are pretty much standard.
Enable 'Asynchronous I/O (AIO)' switch
Enable 'Large read/write' switch
Enable 'Tuning' switch
For some reason I cant enable the Send file option. When I click save settings after I checked the box, the marker is gone again?
Is there any other information you need to help me?
Thanks

@dnar
Do you have any recommendations for the buffer size? I am not sure what I should try and could not find any helpful information on google

Re: Utterly slow SMB/CIFS network
I've just tested a file transfer
When downloading a .tar.lzma file which is around 98 MB big, it downloads with around 100 KB per second. And the filed is corrupted when the transfer is done. But when I upload the same file, it upload with around 8 MB per second.
Any ideas ?

I've disabled the snapshots in the share tabs. Snapshots only work for ZFS right? I am running UFS file system.

Re: Utterly slow SMB/CIFS network
Huh, disabling the AIO did the trick, I got full speed in downloading ! Thanks, that really helped me a lot !
Can you explain to me why that was the cause of the error ?

aio can cause low cache usage.
