all you need to know about ZFS Dedupe

Post by raulfg3 »

If you are considering to enable dedupe in your NAS, please read first this article:

http://constantin.glez.de/blog/2011/07/ ... not-dedupe

My suggest: Dedupe is not usefull for home use ( or low end NAS), only for SOHO or big NAS with lots and lots of RAM.
12.1.0.4 - Ingva (revision 7743) on SUPERMICRO X8SIL-F 8GB of ECC RAM, 11x3TB disk in 1 vdev = Vpool = 32TB Raw size , so 29TB usable size (I Have other NAS as Backup)

Thanks for the post. I currently use 5 2TB disks in raidZ1 pool, and I have to say all has been well. It's about 50% full so looking to the future I have wanted to experiment with dedup but with the cost of memory and or the main boards not supporting enough memory I've been at a stand still. I really like the idea of using SSD drives as cache for the dedup table and would love to build a test box to try it out. Can you point me to some information as to how to configure these SSD drives as L2ARC. I've searched online and found some articles but nothing in direct respect to NAS4FREE. Any input and guidence is appreciated.

I did notice when building a virtual device there is a cache variable. I'm assuming that this is somewhat along the lines of what my intentions are. But in the past I've made headaches when assumming so I'd like to get a good idea on how it should be properly configured. I also couldn't help but ponder many tunning varibles in respect to the searches on L2ARC. The discriptions I found are helpfull but it would be nice to know how much of these tunes are really necessary within NAS4FREE. Anybody with experience please feel free to chime in. Once again thanks,
