Slow speeds?

Post by blueman »

Hi All,

I migrated from FreeNAS to NAS4Free over the weekend and find NAS4Free easier to setup/use, particularly the built in DNLA services. The only issue I have had though is that the speeds of data transfer seem slow.

On FreeNAS at it's best I could get up near 100MB/s, averaging around say 50-80MB/s. On NAS4Free I am getting 20-30MB/s, haven't seen it go any higher. The only real difference I can see between the 2x setups was that FreeNAS was standalone, whereas NAS4Free is using the BitTorrent service and uPnP service.

All the machines in my house are Windows based so CIFS is a must. The biggest problem is streaming to my HTPC running MediaPortal. On FreeNAS when I clicked a show to watch, it would take between 2-8 seconds to start. With NAS4Free it takes approx 20seconds to start, and it has also skipped (picture freezes for between 1-4 seconds, audio sometimes keeps playing sometimes stutters) and dropped frames a few times which never happened with FreeNAS. I'm hoping it's just a config setting, and I can stay with NAS4Free, I would rather that than go back to FreeNAS.

I've included some screenshots of my settings and system. Everything is serverd via a Netgear DGND3700v2 modem/router, my NAS, main desktop and HTPC are all connected via gigabit ethernet.

The other thing I have noticed is the NAS4Free seems to be 'busier' - the network light is constantly blinking and the hdd light is alot more busy compared to FreeNAS, I put this down to the extra services running (I have bittorrent enabled but there were no active torrents when I experienced the problems).

One final thing - I did change a couple of settings yesterday like enable sendfile, but when I logged back in today to screenshot I noticed it was turned off again, I have restarted the NAS since then, is it possible my settings aren't saving? I made sure to press save and restart after changing the settings.
