Disc f/w upgrade?

Post by furnas »

I have four Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 discs in my nas4free.

S.M.A.R.T is reporting that there may be a firmware upgrade available. On checking, I find that there is. My discs are at CC38, the latest f/w is CC49.

I intend to use Seagate's .iso utility, to progressively upgrade the discs (maybe in pairs), checking all appears ok at each stage before doing the next.

So, before I upgrade the discs, I'm wondering if anyone has any advice? (dos, don'ts etc.); e.g. is doing this 'dangerous'? Should I just leave well alone while things are working ok?

Seagate doesn't offer details about specific f/w, so I'm unable to find out what has been changed, or why (fixes, benefits...).

TIA.

Well,
first and important question :
Do u face any problems with the disks in order they need a firmware update ? Else I wouldn't change something here
If u can't get hold of the Changelog of the firmware or Seagate doesn't really recommend an update, I would enjoy my running system and spend my time on other topics :-) ....

Well, this is what they say:

"Seagate products are run by firmware. Having the latest firmware can improve performance and or reliability of your product. Seagate recommends applying new firmware to enhance the performance and or reliability of your drive."

Fairly non-specific. I think I'll just leave them as they are.
