Unable to bind LAN NIC to CIFS/SMB.

Post by K1m0n »

NAS4Free 9.1.0.1 (revision 761) x86-embedded
121907 XSDT1340 Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E4700 @ 2.60GHz 2040MiB RAM

Intel 82801GB/R (ICH7) USB 2.0 controller Intel 82801G (ICH7) USB
controller USB-A Intel 82801G (ICH7) USB controller USB-B Intel 82801G
(ICH7) USB controller USB-C Intel 82801G (ICH7) USB controller USB-D
Subject:
Unable to bind LAN NIC to CIFS/SMB.
Description:
Running embedded 9.1.0.1 - Sandstorm (revision 761) on a modified Intel SS-4200.
Single (motherboard) NIC, as Lan, em0, no Vlan/Carp or anything fancy.

A possible bug about binding Samba on designated NIC:
Go to services/SMB:
Set Interface to: Lan only
Restart Samba.
Error log floods:
smbd[2521]:
nmbd[2517]: [2013/06/10 03:14:51.034300, 0]
lib/interface.c:543(load_interfaces)
nmbd[2517]: WARNING: no network interfaces found

Offc, after this, all smb shares are no longer accessible.
If I revert Services|CIFS/SMB/Settings|Interface to "All Interfaces" all is ok
again.

The above, if replicable in other systems,
prohibits user from defining which interface listens/serves SMB requests.
I had the same behavior since I initially setup this box (ver 636 or so).
I did search but was unable to find something similar.
If already reported please disregard.

If other output from the box is needed let me know.

PS.
Really good work on Nas4free...
Thanks.

Code: Select all

please post (atach) your smb.conf in both situations (All interfaces / LAN only).
12.1.0.4 - Ingva (revision 7743) on SUPERMICRO X8SIL-F 8GB of ECC RAM, 11x3TB disk in 1 vdev = Vpool = 32TB Raw size , so 29TB usable size (I Have other NAS as Backup)

Please see attached file.
I did have a look myself, and when I enable "All Interfaces" "LAN Only" the following lines are missing from smb/conf.

;-------
bind interfaces only = yes
interfaces = auto
;-------

Maybe a prob at the web front-end or something?

Thanks anyway.

EDIT:
For clarity changed "All interfaces" to "Lan Only".

This is correct as far as I know , if you do not add the line bind interfaces only, this mean to use all interfaces.

by other hand When you select LAN to bind :

Code: Select all

bind interfaces only = yes
interfaces = auto
is bad, can be:

Code: Select all

bind interfaces only = yes
interfaces = LAN
or

Code: Select all

bind interfaces only = yes
interfaces = em0
<- or your LAN card

I post to Michel (developer) to see the problem.

Ooops...
My bad (I need some sleep badly).
Meant to say "When selecting Lan Only" the following lines are missing...
Its clear on the smb.conf anyway.
Thanks for your time & understanding.

BTW, I just upgraded to build .775 and I observe the same behavior.
Has the above been acknowledged as a bug?

Do you use dhcp for network interface?

I have a static lan set and when I do set cifs smb interface to lan only, I get nicely

bind interfaces only = yes
interfaces = em0
to my smb.conf
In this case it does works correct.

I have setup also a vm with nas4free rev 775 using DHCP
When set to lan only again I do get
bind interfaces only = yes
interfaces = em0

to my smb.conf
Also in this case it does works correct.

I do not get why you do have
bind interfaces only = yes
interfaces = auto
it seems incorrect and I have no idea how to reproduce that.

rev 761 and 775 both use samba 3.6.15

Sorry, but I have no problems found on my test area.

Oops...
I just checked the zip I attached earlier and I see I've done a mix-up on the file names descriptions :oops:
I deeply apologize for that and for my less-than-adequate initial description of the problem.

When I bind "all interfaces", I correctly get the following lines @ smb.conf:
;-------
bind interfaces only = yes
interfaces = auto
;-------

When I bind "LAN only" the relevant lines are just missing from the config file.

Please see the updated/correct attached file,
and forgive me for the poor report.
Alot of work and less than ideal sleep.

Other than that,
Its on a static IP, default MTU, autosene media, no IPv6.
The only somewhat uncommon setting is the addition of "wins support = yes"
on aux parameters cause I need samba to serve as WINS for the local M$ boxes.
But it does the same even without WINS enabled (just tried..).

Otherwise it works a treat :D

I will try to investigate deeper myself and report back if successful.
