Apple's Time Machine ?!?

Post by sanric »

Hi everybody,

I was wondering wether it could be difficult to implement in the AFP part of this wonderful software an Apple's Time Machine option just like latest FreeNAS incarnations.
It's such a useful thing...
Best regards.

u need schedule automatic backups?

services/afp/shares/new share/Automatic disk discovery mode=Time machine

what's not what u want?

To configure Time Machine on the Mac OS X client, go to System Preferences / Time Machine.
XigmaNAS x64-embedded | INTEL Intel(R) Core(TM) i3-2100 CPU @ 3.10GHz | 9216MiB RAM | X x YTB WD Red ZFS mirror compressed

I'll take a look. Surely when I configured the NAS for the first time I didn't realize this flag... Sorry :-)

You can't, AFAICT, create a working Time Machine setup via the GUI, you need to dive into config files and perform all sorts of manual voodoo. I can't get at the server I set up for Time Machine at the moment but when I can I'll see if I can get anything from the config. It required a lot of googling and reading discussions in web forums (and bitching about why Apple can't use standard protocols like everyone else but has to invent their own weird way of doing things) to set up.

Unfortunately I didn't keep notes, it was a lot of trial-and-error and I didn't know what'd end up working, however from memory I started with this page. If this doesn't work, let me know and I'll try and get access to the server and see what changes I may have had to make to the config files. The HOWTO I've linked to seemed to mostly do the job, since the server running TM is firewalled I need to physically go to where it's located to I don't have easy access to the config information, but I'll try and grab it next time I'm there.
