[Solved] Jail problem or 'don't try new stuff late at night'

Post by Stuarty »

I installed TheBrig and created four jails. everything went well. I deleted two of the jails and now the web-gui does not show any of the jails. I can ssh in and see that two jails remain and are working fine. How can I 'refresh' the information and configuration that appears in the web-gui?

if you save TheBrig config, you can restore it. if save when have 4 jails, open in a text editor and edit to delete 2 old jails, and restore it
12.1.0.4 - Ingva (revision 7743) on SUPERMICRO X8SIL-F 8GB of ECC RAM, 11x3TB disk in 1 vdev = Vpool = 32TB Raw size , so 29TB usable size (I Have other NAS as Backup)

Sadly, too late for that. Now all I can see is an empty config with no information about any of my jails.

I should have saved a config before messing with it but I did not think what I was doing was going to cause such a problem. When I have time I'll go back and reinstall TheBrig and then recreate the jails I want. It's a lesson to me to a) not work late at night, and b) save configurations that are good before tinkering with them.

wait a week before doing it, perhaps fsbruva read this post and can help you.

PD: do you have a saved tar jails ?

I have 5 jails , and when delete it using webGui , TheBrig saved old/deleted jail in a tarball:

you can see in Custom Flavor (Homegrown):

Since this is the first report I've heard of something like this happening, can you please elaborate what you did? Telling TheBrig you want to remove the extension is the only way that I know of to completely remove the content out of the config. Can you download the backup config for you Nas4Free, and post what it has down near the bottom under "TheBrig" key?

I think this is a problem I made rather than a problem with TheBrig.

I created a new jail (my fourth) and tried to install subsonic in it. During the install I ran out of space (I didn't anticipate installing subsonic from ports taking 3gb... and it wasn't finished.) I was logged in both with ssh and the web-gui. When the install hung I tried to close the ssh connection and then remove the new jail through the web-gui. The web-gui froze and the machine was unresponsive. I restarted it and it wouldn't boot. I logged in at the console and deleted the jail, rebooted and the machine came up with lots of error messages about, I think, an xml config which I couldn't save (and I cannot find them in the logs). The machine booted but all information in the web-gui about my jails was gone. Two of the jails remain and are working fine it seems. I can see them with 'jls' on the command line and use the services they provide.

So, I'm happy to help try and explore this but I think the problem was that I lost some settings when the machine crashed and that it was my misadventure that made that happen and so I also understand that there are more important cases to respond to and explore. No data was lost, only some config and some time. I'll treat The Brig more respectfully and patiently in future.

I think it's a great extension. I've struggled with jails before this and TheBrig makes creating and managing them easier to do and understand.

The problem you found was a result of there not being enough space to save the new XML config. Since the current copy was corrupted, then it went with one of the backups that NAS4Free makes anytime you change something. As a result, you reverted to a very old version of your config.

Subsonic from the ports seems like a bad idea. Just follow my tutorial. viewtopic.php?f=79&t=3166 You don't need the entire ports tree. You just need to get the pre-compiled openjdk and some other software. MUCH smaller install. (I think mine is 1G, but you might be able to get it smaller).

As this is a PEBKAC issue, can you please change the subject of your original post to be more accurate? The current title casts aspersions on TheBrig that are untrue.

Yes that makes sense of what happened.

Thanks, I will.

I didn't know 'PEBKAC' before, I do now. Subject changed.
