Suggestions to speed up the system

Post by lindsay »

I have a server with 32GB ram wich is max capacity the board support.
I have 9 2TB hdd`s wich 9 of them is set up as 2xraidz
4 of the spare i will set up as 2xmirror, more hdd`s can be added later among SSD`s
I have also 2 SSD OCZ-AGILITY3 wich i want to use to speed up ZFS.

It`s a mix between SATA2 and SATA3 speed though.

What i want is mostly have best read speed as this one will serve movies to the clients as i am running XBMC,ps3mediaserver,minidlna and maybe PLEX

no hdd can take advantage of sata3 yet. so they are fine with sata 2.

you wont have a problem serving movies with that platform.

where exactly are your speed problems?
Nas4Free 11.1.0.4.4517. Supermicro X10SLL-F, 16gb ECC, i3 4130, IBM M1015 with IT firmware. 4x 3tb WD Red, 4x 2TB Samsung F4, both GEOM AES 256 encrypted.

there are no speed problem to serve video, any conbination is enought to serve video stream.

If you need max. speed, normally striped mirrors is the best option: http://constantin.glez.de/blog/2010/06/ ... erformance
12.1.0.4 - Ingva (revision 7743) on SUPERMICRO X8SIL-F 8GB of ECC RAM, 11x3TB disk in 1 vdev = Vpool = 32TB Raw size , so 29TB usable size (I Have other NAS as Backup)

Which kind of speed? Sustained reads are easy. Out of the box you will get beyond gigabit speed on just reading large files... Random reads are a bit harder, but still very good. Small random writes with sync are another matter and can use a lot of tweaking.

For what you described, really all you need is a big raid, (either radiz2 or a strip of 2 drive mirror vdevs) and a good l2arc cache, which with your ram will happen easily.

So how will your setup be?
The spare hdd`s will be set up as raidz2 because this will hold backups for the network.
Family photos, videos and so on.

I am tranfering now to empty the hdd`s.
I could set up 4 mirrors and add 1 pool as video storage.
Add the 2 OCZ-AGILITY3 as l2arc?
