Can somebody suggest a UPS for my NAS?

Post by oRAirwolf »

I am currently running a NAS server with the current specs:

Intel Atom D525 dual core 1.8Ghz
Gigabyte GA-D525TUD Mini ITX Motherboard w/ Intel NM10 chipset
2 x 2GB DDR3 1600 memory
Corsair Builder Series CX430 V2 ATX 430w Power Supply (80+ Bronze)
Lian Li PC-Q25B Mini ITX Case
Syba SATA II 4 x PCI RAID Host Controller Card (SY-PCI40010)
1 x Corsair Nova Series 2 30GB SSD (OS drive)
4 x Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 3TB 7200RPM (ST3000DM001)

I am currently running Windows 7 with 4 x 2TB drives with no RAID, but one of the drives failed, so I figured it was a good time to upgrade to a single parity RAIDZ setup. I will have the above setup soon, but I learned (I think) with FreeBSD/Linux file systems, changes to the file system are not committed until it properly shuts down. This apparently necessitates the need for a UPS that has the ability to shut down the server.

I dont have a Kill-a-Watt to measure draw, but according to a power supply calculator, I am looking at about 87w, so I dont think I need that much backup power, but I do want one that will fully shut down the server in the event of a power outage. Can anybody recommend a UPS that will signal the server to shut down and provide enough time to fully shut down?

Actually, the entire point of ZFS is to keep file system integrity, even with a sudden power loss. That said, look in the UPS section to see what people are liking and not liking.

Thanks for the replies.

So just to make sure I'm not a total moron and choosing the wrong device, an APC Back-UPS 550 will automatically shut down the server if the power goes out?

Please forgive the dumb questions, this is my first foray into running a BSD/Linux server and I want to make sure I'm doing everything right.

Would I use the "usbhid-ups" driver?
