Hard disk capacity question

Post by vortex »

Hi,

I'm new here.. my friend uses Freenas, I just read about both and began to use NAS4Free. I'm happy with it, just built a NAS with my old Sandy/Ivy Bridge mobo since I'm switching onto Haswell with the normal PC.
Anyway.. for making a NAS from my "old" PC, I bought 3 x 2TB Seagate for it (ST2000DM001).

After initial tests etc. I've put the drives into raid-z1 mode, this should be the "zfs-like raid5".

When I log in to my server to see the status, I see following for the dataset "SEAGATE" (the only one):

SEAGATE
58% of 5.44TB
Total: 5.44T | Used: 2.12T | Free: 1.44T | State: ONLINE

Used: OK, I had a 2TB Barracuda green before, so I copied everything onto the NAS and also downloaded some thing since then.
Free: must be ok as well, with roundings etc.

Total: not OK. For me it should be at around 4TB (3.xx rounded) according to the recipe of raid5, which means: 3x2TB = 6 TB HDD space, 4 TB visible and usable in raid config.
Is it a NAS4Free error, or have I just missed something ? Haven't read the manual etc. but it would seem logical to me to display here the total raid space in actual configuration and not all disks as if I wouldn't have any raid at all.

Thanks

no thats normal.

first you loose space because the 2tb drives are not really 2tb= 3 drives are 5.44 tb like it says in the total.

then you loose spaec from the zfs file system overhead.

so your figures are normal
Nas4Free 11.1.0.4.4517. Supermicro X10SLL-F, 16gb ECC, i3 4130, IBM M1015 with IT firmware. 4x 3tb WD Red, 4x 2TB Samsung F4, both GEOM AES 256 encrypted.

Thanks.

My point was not the "less space" issue, but the too much space in "TOTAL" for 3x2T.
The three drives make 5.44T "naked" just adding eachother + zfs overhead etc.

But from my point of view, "TOTAL" should rather show my raid-z1 capacity (which would be at around almost 4T minus filesystem overhead, so let's say, 3.6T, just assuming). But this is not the case, "TOTAL" is showing summed up drive capacity instead of "raid array" capacity in the specific configuration.

But if this is okay, okay, I have no issue with that, just confusing.

- If I would use raid0 with zfs, I would assume in "TOTAL" about 5.44T just as now (stripe)
- If I would use raid1 with zfs, I would assume in "TOTAL" about 1.8T (just an idea with overhead etc. for mirror)
- .. and for raid5 (raid-z1) I dunno, 3.6T

12.1.0.4 - Ingva (revision 7743) on SUPERMICRO X8SIL-F 8GB of ECC RAM, 11x3TB disk in 1 vdev = Vpool = 32TB Raw size , so 29TB usable size (I Have other NAS as Backup)

Well, thanks, but that guy has the opposite problem.
Or not a problem at all.. ? :)

If it's normal that my TOTAL space is 5.44T with a raid5 (raid-z) of 3 x 2TB disks, then okay. :D Should be far less.
Weird.

No, it's not normal.

Please post zpool status ot scren capture of Disks|ZFS|Pools|Information to be sure you have a raidZ1 pool , perhaps you have a simple ZFS pool ( like a JOBD of disk).

Okay, here it is.

Management and I/O Statistics are a bit incoherent, in mgmt the total space is wrong, while in I/O it seems to be about OK. Free size differs a bit as well.

Size=5.44T this is your total pool size and include parity disk as described here: viewtopic.php?f=57&t=3818&p=19634#p19634
Used=2.14T+Free=1.43T=3.57T is your Usable Data size

So I do not find any extrange.

Thanks for the quick reply. Sorry if this was a newbie question.
But then it's still confusing. Can we take out parity from the "TOTAL" ?
I don't need it (just my data) ;) but as there's just another topic for the same "issue" (now 2 topics!) it's highest time, isn't it ? ;)

That's why I'm asking (it's from the index/info page):

Code: Select all

SEAGATE
 59% of 5.44TB
Total: 5.44T | Used: 2.14T | Free: 1.43T | State: ONLINE
This total is now understood, okay.
But very-very confusing, I would say, user-unfriendly. ;) I would put this into Disk Management tabs somewhere.. if somebody is curious, how much are his physical disks loaded with info..
But for the average user, TOTAL should be sum of the individual pool's sizes in whatever raid mode they are.

Just a suggestion to make NAS4Free more appealing ;) - else I'm very much satisfied with this stuff, using it since weeks.. it now replaces my totally full Seagate 2TB Barracuda Green which I put into an external USB3 case now..
I still didn't erase the content of the Green, all of my photos, life, everything is on that (and now on my NAS) :) - now just testing for a while, 1-2 months.. but until now I really like the system (aside from 1-2 bugs like System -> Advanced -> setting CPU from 'hi-adaptive' to 'adaptive' which throws error code 1 but still does the thing, idle MHz is dropping nicely) :)

Keep up the good work and PLEASE make further upgrades as smooth as you can ;)
