Embedded with a custom network configuration

Post by pozz »

I want to install a new NAS4Free embedded on a server that lacks a monitor. All the settings could be done through webgui, but the network interface must be configured through the monitor at first startup.

I want to avoid to connect a monitor just to configure the NIC, so the question: is there a way to customize the network configuration (for example, DHCP activated on eth0) on the USB pen drive where I copy NAS4Free embedded (with win32diskimager under Windows). I noticed the pen drive with NAS4Free embedded is not readable under Windows, so I don't know how to find the file with the default configuration.

Hi,

Long time ago I used to run the liveCD on some desktop machine,
connect an USB pen to that machine, install from the live CD to that USB pen,
boot the desktop machine once from the pendrive and only configure the IP adress,
nothing else, shutdown and move the USB pen to the NAS-to-be box and boot it.
Do the rest of the config through the webGUI.

However during install, choose the wrong disk to install on and you wipe everything from
the harddisk of the desktop machine.

If you want an amd64 install, the desktop must be amd64 as well.
If you already flashed a liveUSB image, you can skip the install and simply boot a desktop machine
with the USB pen and only configure the IP adress ( I suppose).
regards,
Jan

if you load the OS else where with a monitor,
and re boot the target hardware from the new OS storage
then blindly go through options 1 and 2 [assuming a different nic]
then check the router for new IP leases
then use that for the web browser address
and if you are lucky.....

Where the configuration is stored in NAS4Free embedded distro? I think always on USB pendrive.

So first question. What is the filesystem on USB pen driver and how can I read it?

Second question. Where to find the file with the configuration and what is its format? How can I modify this config file to specify custom IP settings?

The filesystem is UFS and the config file is just an XMLfile under <mountpoint>/config/config.xml
System specs: NAS4Free amd64-embedded on ASUSTeK. M5A78L-M LX PLUS - AMD Phenom(tm) II X3 720 Processor - 8GB ECC Ram, Storage: 2x ZFS mirrors with 4x Western Digital Green (WDC WD10EADS)

So I can mount the USB pen drive and change default config.xml with my custom settings of NIC interface.

Why don't you boot the embedded version from a machine with a monitor, change IP settings and plug the flash drive to the desired machine? It's easier I believe...
