Install more of base FreeBSD

Post by paulg »

I would like to run another program, wview, on my system so I don't have to run my desktop computer all the time. What is the best way to get /usr/ports, etc. without filling up the flash drive?

I'm using a embedded install and would like to have a full /usr/ports/etc on the drive. I did read this: http://wiki.nas4free.org/doku.php?id=faq:0011

Thanks,
Paul

I suggest taking a look at:

http://wiki.nas4free.org/doku.php?id=do ... owto:jails

I've found that to be the easiest and least hassle way of doing things. Essentially, you can have what feels like a full FreeBSD system (with man pages, normal paths, ports, etc) running inside a jail on NAS4Free.

Before running the jail, I did set it up such that I was able to use packages that were running off a mounted volume, but that involved a fair amount of changing paths (and ensuring those paths survived a reboot), changing a bunch of the package environment variables, creating a bunch of symlinks, etc. It was rather cumbersome and messy, though. I think the jails approach is a much cleaner way of doing things if you're going to have more packages than will fit on the memory disk that NAS4Free creates on startup.

Good luck!

Thanks, this is great suggestion.

There is a problem with the bottom of that wiki page, there is a goofy spem email and everything after adding ports is gone. It also says update needed, what has changed?

I sort of stopped before the "Advanced Topics" section of that page and went in my own direction after that (I actually tried some of the advanced topics section, but couldn't get my buildworld to compile with those options shown).

If you're familiar with FreeBSD at all, once you finish up and start the jail, entering the jail will very much feel like you're on a "normal" FreeBSD system. Having used FreeBSD quite a bit in the past, I stopped there and just proceeded on my own.

Far as I can see the spam has been removed. What has changed is most likely the paths and other minor things that often get moved around as systems are upgraded. Other than that the information still appears useful.
