I'm not sure what to do at this point, I've read so many pages with "restore from backup you're screwed" and I'm hating myself for trying to migrate FreeNAS 0.7 to Nas4Free 9.1. I did the upgrade and it looked ok until I rebooted, it hung syncing vnodes for an hour+ scrolling increasing numbers forever so I hard rebooted. It had to rebuild my SoftRAID1 and when it finished that yesterday I discovered some of my data was gone - naturally the half I care about. No problem, I use Unison to sync between my house and my parents' house for mutual offsite backup. Unfortunately, I forgot that it ran on cron AND at startup, so it had already run a sync since the folders vanished. Shutting down to save the state Nas4Free crashed and did the infinite syncing vnodes again (remaining sync never gets below 200) so I killed it and unhooked the disks. Now I trust Nas4Free even less, I've never lost anything until I tried to "upgrade". And to make matters worse as I was trying to see what was happening the Nas4Free GUI kept hanging.
What can I do? What should I do?
I have one dismantled the Nas4Free 9.1.0.1 machine that had 1 corrupted and 1 degraded drive in RAID1 SoftRAID1 UFS and labeled it's drives if I need to know which is which in the RAID. I did a safe-shutdown the FreeNAS 0.7 machine that unison deleted my data off but had an undamaged SoftRAID1 UFS (less the deletions).
I'm at the point where I'm considering sending a drive to a data recovery center and get a quote if they can even find the data for me or giving up and moving to a custom built Linux server that I hand craft after buying more drives to rescue what little is left.
Help?

Sounds like you will need to look at the UFS Explorer program, or else send it off for recovery.
As you know, this is why synchronized backups/mirroring/RAID is NOT a backup. It is a disaster waiting to happen. A similar thing happened to the KDE developers when their git source code repo experienced some kind of file system corruption. They were saved because a mirror happened to be offline. All the other mirrors ended up corrupted.

mmiller7 You fogot about Unison and you trust Nas4Free even less ?
Perfect.
Any server, under any operation system not be able to protect themselves against the hapless administrator.
Try to recovery you backups with builtin Windows recovery tools ( NTFS know do it) when you use Windows. But for do this, ntbackup need be activated
