I don't know. That's why I am asking ....

Actually, I think, I had my HDDs spin down for moments using ataidle -S commands.
But I am not sure. The HDDs are quite silent.

Have you enabled SMART monitoring? By default NAS4Free's SMART monitoring checks the disks every 30 minutes and this can cause the disks to spin up.

The Disks|Management|S.M.A.R.T. page in the UI offers the following "Power Mode" options:
Never - Poll (check) the device regardless of its power mode. This may cause a disk which is spun-down to be spun-up when it is checked.

Sleep - Check the device unless it is in SLEEP mode.

Standby - Check the device unless it is in SLEEP or STANDBY mode. In these modes most disks are not spinning, so if you want to prevent a laptop disk from spinning up each poll, this is probably what you want.

Idle - Check the device unless it is in SLEEP, STANDBY or IDLE mode. In the IDLE state, most disks are still spinning, so this is probably not what you want.

If the posts above dont help, how are the drives connected?

Some controller cards dont support passthrough commands required for spindown.

If you want "clean test" for disk spinning - not open webgui. Only ssh connect and check disks by hand

I have a HP N54l.
The HDDs are connected to the internal Controller, but not used as RAID.
The RAID is done by ZFS
