I just bought a LSI SAS9211-8i and I am starting to test it.
I noticed that it immediately became very hot, reaching 70°C (158°F) measured on the heat sink with an infrared temperature gun.
Does anyone have any idea if this is normal or should I return the board?
Does anyone use fans over it?
Thanks

Re: LSI SAS9211-8i running very hot
It seems to be within ranges:
http://www.lsi.com/products/storagecomp ... 11-8i.aspx
I would however run some fan over it, just to have some airflow and to extend it lifespan, as 10C drop in the operating temperatures of the electronic equipment may double the time between failures...

Re: LSI SAS9211-8i running very hot
I installed a very small fan directly over the heat sink and the temperature went down to 35ºC (95°F).
My only complain is that I can actually hear this fan. All the others are very silent in this case/power supply.
It is barely audible , but I like silence when I am hearing classical music.

Re: LSI SAS9211-8i running very hot
In that case I would suggest you install a bigger fan with lower RPM. To be honest any air flow is better than none and it does not have to be directed onto the piece of equipment you want to cool, just create a bit of a draught in your case and it will cool your SAS card down. You could stick a 120 slow RPM fan at front and one at the end...
