I have recently bought an n54l microserver for use with n4f and had read that people had varying success with wake on lan. I decided to cross my fingers and hope it worked. In some of the threads discussing microserver+wol, the posters asked for people to report their experience with wol, so:
I have used wol probably 10 times now and it seems to work just fine.
N4f describes the system as:
NAS4Free 9.1.0.1 (revision 847) x64-embedded; HP ProLiant AMD Turion(tm) II Neo N54L Dual-Core Processor 1920MiB RAM
The bios ID is 041, date 07/29/2011
I set wol to 'on':
Network|Lan Management|Wake on Lan = On
And for interest/help, I am using the solarwinds free wol program.

According to this post, WOL seems to work only with a Gigabit link, not with 100Mbps Ethernet:
