Recreating ISCSI after new install

Post by thefatone »

I had my nas4free system up and functioning. ZFS Pool. ZFS Volume. ISCSI on ZFS volume all working.

The hard drive holding the nas4free system failed and I of course had not backed up my configuration.

I re-installed nas4free and successfully imported my zfs pool. The volume showed up and it all looks correct. So now I need to reconfigure ISCSI.

My question is simply - Do I need to follow any special procedures? Perform some sort of ISCSI import? Or do I just add a new extent aimed at the ZFS volume and configure as before?

I am new at all of this and got through the initial setup by following tutorials and reading forum posts. I haven't found anything on this procedure in the forums yet and just want a heads up on my course / potential problems.

Thanks

Well I didn't hear back, so I just went for it.. and succeeded.

I followed this guide for setting up iscsi: http://wiki.nas4free.org/doku.php?id=do ... zfs_volume

I started about halfway down with "Create an iSCSI target" because I already had my zfs_volume working again.

During the step titled "Create an Extent" I was able to simply select the type as "ZFS Volume" and pick my volume.

I followed the rest of the steps as outlined, and everything just worked. I was able to connect to the iscsi target and find my files waiting for me.

Then I made a fresh backup of my configuration.

Overall very smooth. Hope this helps someone else.

As a belated follow up, I am not sure that selecting "ZFS Volume" vs "File" makes any difference. From what I can tell, you re-added the extant, the browser presented the file in your zpool that had been created the first time. The good news is that since the file already existed, the NAS4Free system used that file instead of re-creating a new file (over-writing the one that used to be there).
