Am I making this too hard?

Post by wareaglenooga »

I have been running FreeNas 0.7.2 Sabanda (revision 8191) for over a year now. It's an older IBM System x206. It's running the FreeNAS installation on an old 2 gig IDE hard drive and has a couple of 2TB SATA drives used for storage. I recently acquired an old server, an IBM System 3200 (the price was right, free!). It supports more SATA drives (hot swap even!), so I looked into moving my NAS installation there. In my research, I discovered NAS4Free... So, here's what I think I want to do. Please tell me if I'm making this more difficult than it should be.

I want to install the latest and greatest NAS4Free embedded on a USB stick and just boot the new System3200 from that. I don't particularly care about the old configuration... it wasn't anything special that I can't recreate in a few minutes. But I want to pull my 2TB SATA drives from the old FreeNAS box and install them in my new FreeNAS box. They use the UFS file system. I do NOT have enough storage laying around to backup my 2TB SATA drives before doing any of this, so pulling the drives from the old install and moving them to the new install *has* to just work... Any advice?

No, not yet. That's a project on down the line. Now that I have a box that can handle more than two SATA connections.
