RAID 5 lost a drive, second drive is flapping

Post by TechGuy44 »

I'm helping a friend running FreeNAS 0.69b2 with his NAS (I know, it's severely out of date. I'll update it for him after this recovery). Someone else set it up for him, so he doesn't know much about the GUI, and I'm not familiar with it, either.

One drive failed, drive ad4. We replaced that. Another drive, ad6, keeps popping up with errors and stopping the rebuild process. If I restart the NAS, the rebuilding on ad4 restarts. Is there a way I can remount ad6 and resume the rebuilding process on ad4, without restarting the server and the process all over again?

you could try cloning ad6 with ddrescue on another drive and then restart the rebuilding

Nas4Free 11.1.0.4.4517. Supermicro X10SLL-F, 16gb ECC, i3 4130, IBM M1015 with IT firmware. 4x 3tb WD Red, 4x 2TB Samsung F4, both GEOM AES 256 encrypted.

We don't have a second drive just yet. I'd like to get the RAID array up and running as soon as possible.

Could I run the Remove and Insert commands on ad6?

It is probably flapping because it is failing. This often happens when drive from the same batch are in a array together. Getting it running ASAP is risking the data quite a bit.
