Is it possible to update in place?

For "upgrading" from FreeNAS/NAS4Free Legacy to XigmaNAS and upgrading XigmaNAS to newer builds.

Is it possible to update in place?

Post by bunk3m »

Hi.

I see that the recommended way to update is to download a new image, reboot from image and do the update.... remembering of course to backup etc.

Isn't there a way to do the update in place, ie. port upgrade outdated or whatever is the correct command from nas4free/freebsd?

If not, why not?

if you have embeded install, you can update N4F from webGUI.

Thank you. I did an install to a small hard drive that is only used for N4F.

So I guess there is no way to do the update in place with this configuration? I must download image, reboot with downloaded image and then select upgrade.

Bummer.

what configuration?

If you do a full install = no
If you do a embeded install = yes

Please post what is your config (your install).

mine is full:

see Platform

When I want to update my install, I download latest x64_liveCD.iso, burn a cd with this ISO, boot N4F from this new CD, select option 9 ( update), select update, and reboot, done.

I do not lose data or config and my Nas is updated.

Thanks raulfg3.

Here is my config.

I was hoping I could use a command line to do update. I guess I have to download image, burn and upgrade this way.

Glad to hear that I won't loose the setup etc. as I've been learning as I go over the past 4-5 months so don't remember everything I did to set up.

Is there a place to request enhancements? I'd like to request the ability to use "apt-get update" or "port upgrade outdated" or some command line tools to do an update in place.

Wouldn't that be easier for full installs?
